What is an intermittent ectopic beat?

I have recently been diagnosed with an ectopic heart beat. Can anyone share any light on this please?

  • Answer:

I have an irregular heart beat and didn't find it until I was 27, about 2 years ago. At first I was freaking out thinking I was gonna die. The doctors didn't take it seriously because of my young age. They ran a bunch of test, stress test, I had to wear the heart monitor for like 48 hours or something like that. In the end I am okay and I am not gonna die any faster. Its been proven that over half the people in this world have some kind of heart irregularity that they don't know about it. what makes us different from them is that we are now aware. There is also a thing called normal irregular which means its irregular but normal for your body and then there is irregular irregular which is not normal for your body. I look back and laugh now about how badly I stressed but at the moment I thought my world was ending...it didn't though. Good luck, I hope this helps.

An ectopic beat is just a random heart beat that occurs outside of the expected chain of electrical signals that the heart itself normally generates. What this means clinically has to be determined by your doctor. It could be meaningless or life threatening; ask your doctor about how it relates to you. Ralph

Staying very basic, your heart is an electrical pump. The electrical current running through the pump as it works shows up as that squiggly line on the heart monitor. When the electrical current that runs the pump has a surge or there is a delay in the conduction of the current, there is an irregular beat. This is called an ectopy (an irregular formation on the monitor). This can be from stress, a congenital condition (you were just born with it), it could simply be a once-in-a-life-time-never-to-be-repeated… or it could be a precursor of a heart attack. There is no way to know for sure without lots of tests... Tests I'm sure your doctor has already scheduled.

Many many people have ectopics and they ere completely benign and nothing at all to worry about however they can can indicate underlying cardiac problems or in themselves be a precursor to more serious cardiac arrythmias. There is no way for anyone to tell without detailed investigations talk to your Cardiologist they will know whether in your particular case there is any need for concern. Best wishes
