Why do I have sudden fast and pounding heartbeats?

What causes a cycle of pounding heartbeats?

  • I woke up this morning and felt like I was having cycles of heavy heartbeats - about six normal beats and then four heavy ones (very noticable)...anyone know what this is - or is it just psychological?

  • Answer:

It sounds like you're having palpitations. I get them fairly regularly, usually when I first wake up in the morning, or when I just get out of a hot shower. They're really odd and a bit freaky. I've been to the doctor several times, and we've determined that they aren't dangerous or physical, but mental. My palpitations are most likely caused by anxiety. I'm not stressed out, or anything, I'm just a highly strung person in general. That might be what you're experiencing too? If it doesn't happen often, don't worry too much about it. If it happens again, or starts happening regularly, you might want to visit your doctor just to make sure that nothing serious is going on.

Well all heartbeats are caused by the chambers of your heart pumping blood. If you felt an unusually strong series of heartbeats it is most likely that your heart received a stronger than usual impulse at one of the nodes. All human hearts have a natural pacemaker (S-A node) so your heart should have went back to normal. If so you probably have nothing to worry about if not seek medical attention.

could be any number of things, anxiety certainly, palpitations are very common according to my GP, though doesn't help when it happens as it can be very disconcerting. If really worried see your GP who will do simple test and put your mind at ease.

pure psychological. you must have probably been counting carefully and make assumptions, which is wrong. the only way you'll know is when you go to doctors.

a heart murmur can do that. Also, could just be a fluke, like when your arm twitches or something. If it happens again I would go get it checked out.

I have had this many times in my life. If they were very frequent then I would worry. Apart from this I wouldn't think there is anything to worry about. I think that everyone gets it at some time.
