High blood pressure for a 14- year old?
-
I got my blood pressure today at a local clinic, and it says 132-70/140-80. but she didn't make me do jumping jacks or anything I think it's just different on different arms? but anyway I was a bit nervous when I walked into the room. [it was suppose to be my physical exam for sports]. would that have any effect on it? I'm also heavier than i should be. I'm currently 14 and I'm about 5'5 or 5'6 and I'm 161 lbs. Ok I'm alot heavier than i should be. but I'm just wondering if it's enough to affect my blood pressure like that? because I know people who are way heavier than me and doesn't suffer from high blood pressure. [i'm really sorry if i offended anyone with this question]. and another reason why my blood pressure is higher than it should be, is that my dad has high blood pressure. i know i'm not necessarily suffering from high blood pressure but it's still kind of high compared to normal. and now my dad is like hating me because i'm not healthy. I really don't get my parents' parenting style. i get 2 b's on my report card they tell me im the stupidest kid they know. I get all A's they just give me a nod. I tell them I'm taking 2 advance math classes next year at the same time so I can get to calculus by senior year, they say "so?" [arizona is 1 year behind in math so I try to catch up with kids in other states]. I told them i joined theatre. they say "WHY..?" i told them i made it into the gifted program they're like "ok.." like.. they never care or they never show that they care or are even proud about the good things i do but yet if i do something not "perfect" i get yelled at. i mean my friend didn't make it into the gifted program and she was bummed and her parents told her that it's okay and as long as she tried her best. but me..? if i don't make it then they'll start comparing me with other kids that did. oh, I'm sorry i got a little carried away, but anyway do you think that heredity would play a huge part in me havinig an above average blood pressure? because i'm tired of my parents hating on me because im not "healthy" i mean who does that?! and it's not like i wished to have a higher blood pressure. -_-. im really sorry the details are really long.

I am not a doctor so I can't give medical advice but it seems as if you are borderline hypertensive. You are in the early stages, or mild stage 1 of hypertension. I suggest you do all that is necessary to prevent it from progressing. Yes, it is possible to have high blood pressure at your age primarily if you are (1) overweight (2) have a genetic predisposition to hypertension and (3) have high cholesterol or heart complications prior to the onset of hypertension. It sounds like you definately have number one and two already. Sure people say easily "Get on medication and you will be okay" Yes, you can take medication, but it is not ideal for someone your age. For example, if you miss this medication after you get on it, your blood pressure will rise immediately because your body necessitates it. Medication has so many constraints on your life. Some interact against certain foods so you can't eat what you want. Others cause dizziness, hair loss or contribute to diabetes etc... . Some calcium channel blockers can lead to severe gingival hyperplasia amongst other things. The diuretics keep you going to the bathroom ever 5 minutes. There are many types of hypertensive medications and many of the medications have so many side effects. Some people have to take these to live. I mean, what is a consistent migraine compared to death? But, if you can prevent taking medications, you should do everything in your power to try, especially if you are young. My grandmother died at 42 from hypertension, my mother has heart failure because of it and takes 8 pills a day, and I was diagnosed with it in my twenties. None of us are obese, it was primarily a genetic predisposition. So, I am very familiar with hypertension and many of the medications. DO GO TO THE DOCTOR. But you can also take some things into your own hands now before it gets any worse: 1. Eat healthy ( rid of saturated fat, high cholesterol foods that help constrict blood vessels. Eat high fiber) 2. Lose weight! Work out in an activity that causes you to sweat alot. Make a normal workout routine or get into a sport or bike riding. 4. Drink alot of water and try UVA URSI tea. It acts as a nice natural diuretic ( but tastes like crap). Also try hawthorne tea. If you try to work against this now ( in addition to seeing a doctor), it will make you life better in the future. No one wants to spend their life taking medications. Good Luck!

For starters, heredity does play a part in anything that happens with your body. I don't necessarily think you're overweight, that's just me. If you think you're overweight, then start a program for yourself that you follow daily, in which you exercise, and eat healthy. Both of those will give you a weight that you want and the lower blood pressure. Like I said before, there are some factors playing in you that you can't control. Congrats on the good grades, and hard classes. I'm taking all honors classes in high school, and classes at the college, so I understand how hard it is to make good grades. If your parents are that excited for you, I'm sorry, and I hope they become excited. My parents are happy for me when I get good grades, but that's because that's what they expect of me. I hope everything works out for you. I'm only 17, so I can understand your position on everything, and I'm not necessarily healthy either. My doctor said I fell in the same group that my peers did, right where I was supposed to be, but I think I'm a little overweight, so I understand that. If you have any questions, or you just want to talk, e-mail me.

yes heredity does play a part. My dad has high blood pressure too. So for now i am already taking good care of my self by exercising to reduce the possible illness that i may have next time. U should too :). Good luck!

For a 14 year old, your blood pressure is not great, but its not that bad. Certainly, heredity could be a cause. But so could the stress of having to get the physical, what you ate that day, if you were standing up or sitting down, or even laying down. there are a large number of things that can affect your BP. Normal is 120/80. The bottom number is called you diastolic pressure. It is the one you should observe most closely. Yours is just fine. Your top number is slightly high, but nothing to be too alarmed about. Eat better & exercise more often and I'm sure you'll see that you BP will come down. Additionally, if you were getting a sports physical & they felt your BP was too high, then they would not have cleared you to play.

dude thats not that high, i mean its high but you can take medicine to lower it if a doctor thinks thats what you need. Make sure you didnt have any caffine before you got your blood pressure or it will altar it greatly. Mine was as high as yours because i drank a red bull before i got it done. I got it done again and it was down soo much lower.
