Can acute sinusitis increase blood pressure?

High blood pressure and sinusitis?

  • Whenever i have a bad attack of sinusitis my blood pressure goes up to 155/110 i also get pins and needles in my hands at the time. is this normal? what can be done to lower the blood pressure- whenever i get this i also have throbbing like pressure in my head and stabbing pains in my neck and upper spine

  • Answer:

There is no such thing as "the blood pressure", and the figures you quote are acceptable, - predictable, in fact if you're treating the sinusitis with medications like ephidrine. It would be odd if they didn't rise, so nothing to worry about there. Both systolic and mean arterial pressure can be lowered by sedation, rest, and of course, sleep. (Oddly, alcohol lowers both! - Shouldn't take it with medications, but if you measure your B/P's at 10 minute intervals while gradually getting intoxicated, you'll find they drift wonderfully down! -I promise!- try it, ...It's fun to observe!) Diastolic pressure (the lower one) is principally "response" to the body's "demand" for blood flow. Don't give that one a second thought. The stress (or distress, perhaps?) of having a sinusitis attack is partly to blame for the slight rise in both systolic and diastolic pressures. Again, demand and response, - perfectly normal. PS, - Mine frequently goes up to well over 200/110 and has done for years and years.....but then again, it comes down again to as low as 120/75 when I'm asleep. But then, I'm 80. Since I know exactly what's going on, what's causing it, what the risks are, and what myths are widely circulated about the (4) blood pressures, it doesn't worry me one jot. Incidentally, just because a young person's B/P's measured near his elbow is low, -say 130/75, doesn't mean that's the real pressure generated within the heart. That could be easily -say 200/120. But the elasticity of the upper arteries absorbs a large fraction of the 'generated pressure' so it only SEEMS low, at the brachial artery (near the elbow). So, -conversely, just because a person has high readings at the brachial artery, it doesn't mean necessarily that the cardiac generated pressure (within the left ventricle) is all that high. Depends on the elasticity of the arteries. The less elastic, the more accurately pressures further down the arteries reflect generated pressures, that's all.

you should see a cardiologist as soon as possible! i have sinusitis but no symptoms like that! sounds like you might have high blood pressure and need medicine to control it.

If you're taking products like Sudafed when you get the sinus infections, that would be the cause of the increase in blood pressure. Pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient in most OTC sinus products, causes high blood pressure.

GET YOURSELF TO THE ER ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont linger this sounds like a heart problem, not sinusitis! you could have a massive stroke or worse if you dont act right away..dont do as I did,my blood pressure went up to 200 over 116 and if i didnt see my doctor when I did I wouldnt be around fooling with my computer today,he put me on 5 millegrams of norvasc for the rest of my life and to this I am truly greatful.

I too have high blood pressure, the last time I got checked it was 190/110 and I cried all the way to my outfit. The attending doctor just upped my medication. Instead of taking 15 mg, I now take 20 mg and it seems to be working. It seems to be hereditary since different members of my family have been diagnosed with this affliction. Seek some medical help ASAP. I am fine now and I hope you will be also. Just get some medical help. I too have trouble with my sinuses. I take over-the-counter meds for that. I also take an 81mg of aspirin every day plus vitimins so I think I am in pretty good shape. I hope and pray for the best for you. It's not fun, but at least you are still living!!!

I would see your GP. Have never heard of BP going up because of Sinusitis. You don;t mention your age but I strongly advise a GP visit.

I don't know if it's normal but I have sinusitis at the moment and have pins and needles in my hands and when I went to the doctor my bp was high when it isn't normally. I get the feeling someone is pressing down hard on my face and for some reason it gets worse when going out and on entering shops etc. I suppose the only way to lower your bp is by treating the sinusitis.

You need to see a real Dr, not ask a question as serious as this. There is a stone that helps to reduce your blood pressure, its called aventurine, I was given this stone which was little nuggets made up of a bracelet and it really worked for me. worth a try. but seriously make an appt. with your Dr on Tuesday. Take care x

your sinusitis has nothing to do with your high blood pressure except it may go up momentarily !But your pins and needles of course has connection with your high BP ! Take salt restricted diet and do not eat saturated fatty food ! You are subjected to take medicine as you are on risk of many thing as high blood pressure is the number one silent killer of the whole world ! Irrespective of you age you should take medicine and if it runs in the family than life long !You should also go for blood sugar as diabetes and High BP goes hand in hand ! To save your eyes , kidneys and brain , heart please do not ignore to take the medicine as problems may come without any notice ! Always YouRsmE

Go to your MD asap. Any tingling usually means something irregular is going on in your circulatory system. Other than that, the fact that you have "stabbing pains" anywhere when you have high blood pressure should be a red flag. The area where the stabbing pains are is right near your heart and your head, the most important parts of your body for essential function. Get to your doctor or emergency room quick. My brother had high blood pressure in about that range, (note: I am not a doctor, but this worked for him and a few other people), he takes a capsule of olive oil extract and a teaspoon of olive oil everyday and it went from about 155/100 to about 129/85. I don't know if it's placebo or what. But you should really ask your doc.
