How Dangerous Is High Blood Pressure?

How can you tell the difference between high blood pressure caused by stress or medication?

  • I am a 21 year old female, exercise 4-5 days a week and eat a fairly healthy diet, 121 pounds 5'2, Today I went to take my blood pressure and it was 147/114.I used a second machine to check and it said the same thing. I know this is fairly high and I am slightly concerned. My main question is whether this is being caused by stress or medication. I do have generalized anxiety disorder and I am on 50 mg of Zoloft a day and have been for 2 years with no issues, not to mention I am in a challenging academic program in college and it is approaching finals week. However I am also on birth control, Ocella ( Zarah) and have been for 2 years with no other symptoms, but I know this medication does cause an increase in high blood pressure with some people. High blood pressure does run in the family, both parents are on medication. Any ideas? I'd rather not go off the birth control because I also have PMDD and it is the only med that can keep me sane. I also have not been taking my blood pressure regularly because I've felt fine, but high blood pressure is known as the silent killer for a reason I suppose. Any answers would be appreciated! • Answer:

Blood pressure claims 33% of lives in the world every year. Blood pressure is caused due to excess fluid in the body. So u are given medicines to reduce fluid thru frequent urination. The first common enemy for blood pressure has been declared to be salt for last 50 years or more. But there is no scientific basis of that statement till date. Salt helps in drawing water from vegetables and that helps in preserving the vegetables or other food items for longer periods. So if a person drinks salt and water over empty stomach for 24 hours and then stops fluid intake completely for the next 24 hours the result will be huge amounts of urination and easy movement of stools for next week. Restrict water and other intake to 750 ml in 24 hours. Drink 250 ml water (1 glass) one hour before each meal. Once in 4 days give up water for 24 hours. That will lower the blood pressure. All other drugs, medicines and foods simply fool u and does no good. Increasing the water intake to control blood pressure is the biggest foolish idea.

Neither of those medicines is likely to cause hypertension, especially an isolated diastolic hypertension (bottom number). Most people would have 1 or 2 readings in the "high blood pressure" range if they took their BP ten days in a row. A single snapshot in time is not that useful... in fact you can't even diagnose hypertension in a single day. Go see a doctor.

Take your blood pressure everyday at the same time and average it out over a period of 1 to 2 weeks to get your true blood pressure. Most likely you won't even need medication. Doctors are prescription happy these days. Your blood pressure differs depending on the time of day, emotional state, what drugs you've taken, food you've eaten recently.
