Cardiologist prescribed metoprolol, my family doctor thinks he's "jumping the gun"?
-
Ok so I went to the ER almost 2 months ago for what I now realize was a panic attack along with a virus I had, but I went because my heart was beating fast and I was literally freaking out because of that and my virus. Long story short, after every test under the book to look at my heart, nothing at all was wrong except for a very mild heart arythmia. I ended up going to the cardiologist they referred me to and he prescribed me metprolol for the arythmia and I do sometimes have a higher pulse (around 101 or below when I'm majorly stressing). However, after I went to the cardiologist I had an appointment with my regular doc who looked over all the tests and everything and said he thinks they are "jumping the gun" by prescribing me the beta blocker and he wouldn't have done that. I only take half of a 25 MG tablet, but I do want to get off the beta blocker because we want to try for another baby soon and I'm not the type that's okay with taking drugs while pregnant. I am in my twenties and have great blood pressure and am skinny and don't have any health problems. Should I get off the beta blocker like my regular doc says? (I trust him more than the cardiologist anyways). Just wanted other's opinions.

Answer:
You are taking a really small dose. That being said. With you having no heart problems Except some mild tachycardia when stressed. I would personally go with your GP--He knows you.

Talk to the cardiologist, they're heart specialists, your GP is NOT. It may be genetic, but that doesn't mean it's normal, your cardiologist should be able to explain WHY he gave the drugs to you, the side effects, and if they were absolutely necessary. Did you tell him you wanted to try to conceive soon? You need to COMMUNICATE with your cardiologist.
You asked, I answered
Have a talk with your cardiologist, a beta blocker also addresses anxiety as it regulates your heart beat but keep in mind that continued use of beta blockers has a 98% chance of erectile dysfunction for men, nothing that viagra or cialis won't cure, not sure if there are any effects for women along those lines. It's quite likely that your cardiologist is just thinking of your heart health while your family Doctor is thinking of your general health, some specialists get wrapped up in their specialty too much.

I'd go back to the cardiologist first and discuss things through with him/her. Tell them you want to start trying for another baby and you don't want to be on the betablockers when you do. Hard to say what you should do as the cardiologist is the expert in heart conditions and heart meds etc but your own GP is the expert in you. Could you see a different cardiologist and get their opinion as in my experience (hlhs and tapvd, had 25 + heart operations (Mum stopped counting at 25) seem to spend my whole life traipsing from cardiologist to cardiologist!) they all have their own (different) ideas about what is best and what you need to do. Just because this one cardiologist put you on meds doesn't mean another cardiologist would've thought that was the way to go.

I also think you should listen to your cardiologist. He's a heart specialist. The family doctor isn't. A rapid heart rate isn't good for the heart. It makes the heart work harder than its suppose to. If you're uncomfortable taking it, get a second opinion (preferably from another cardiologist). . Also, you should ask what effect a pregnancy would have on your heart. Sometimes a pregnancy isn't recommended when you have heart problems. (BTW, I take this drug and haven't had any problems with it)
