Is my heart beat normal?

Missed heart beat normal?

  • Over the last few months I have noticed that every day or two my pulse becomes irregular and my heart seems to flutter. This can happen a few times a day and goes away after a few minuites. The other day it started again and I decided to measure my pulse by feeling my carotid artery. I noticed that I would get several regular beats then a missed beat then several regular beats and another missed beat and so on. There was no compensatory extra beat or thud, just a funny fluttering feeling where the missed beat was. I didnt feel faint or anything but was a bit scared by this missing beat. I know heart arrhythmias are common and wondered if this sounds normal? I am 49 male, 183pounds, bp 130/85, fairly active and healthy, all info welcome.

  • Answer:

you need to see a cardiologist. Make sure your pulse isn't speeding up significantly, because those are pretty sure signs of heart disease. Best Wishes!

Everyone has several hundred to several thousand aberrant beats daily. These may be early, late, dropped, singlets, couplets, and in short 'runs'. In the absence of symptoms these aberrant beats are most likely normal. There are far too many limitations in this forum to diagnose anyone. When I say that everyone has aberrant heart beats daily very few people recognize such aberrations. As this seems to be something that you notice and is recurrent I would strongly encourage you to see your physician for an electrocardiogram. Further decisions will be made after that test. I wish you the very best of health and in all things may God bless.

There are a lot of things that can cause an irregular heart beat even if it just skips a beat once in awhile. The healthiest people could still have something going on. You should consult with your doctor just to be safe. They will probably do a stress test and a few other tests to see what's going on. Best to catch it in the beginning just to make sure. It could be nothing to worry about. You should not fool around with the heart stuff. If you feel scared a bit by this then it's time to see the doc about it. Like I said it could be a number of things that may effect the rhythm of the heart. Stress, high blood pressure, diabetes, and lots more. It does not sound normal to me and I am not trying to scare you but it could be something you should be concerned about. I cannot tell you what to do but I wish you well and hope you get it checked by a doctor. Take care and good luck with it all. I hope it's something very simple and nothing to be worried about.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry so much about it if you were younger. Your heart is a muscle, like all other muscles, not a machine. it does not work like people see in movies, number of things effect it, including breathing rate and volume, physiological profile and so on. Like i said, mainly because of your age, i would recommend stopping by your doctor and getting an EKG. Get a blood work up also if you haven't had one in a while.

to miss the odd beat is normal once in a while but you would not be aware of it the symptoms you describe are not normal, so please see a doctor

Many of these irregularities are not dangerous but a few are. The best thing to do is see a doctor about it and find out.
