Why would I get dizzy and my heart pound when I stand up?
-
When I stand up or bend over I feel my heart pound really hard in my chest and I can hear the heart beat "wooshing" in my ears, and I start to go dizzy. I also sometimes feel my heart beat or thump one really hard beat, and I feel a rush of adrenaline without doing anything strenuous at all. The doctor put me on meds for panic attacks, but I'm not sure it's just panic. These symptoms have had a pretty recent onset. (3-4 months ago). I do have panic attacks, but these symptoms happen even when I'm not having a panic attack. If anything now that I'm on these meds, the panic attacks are coming from these weird heart sounds. I have heard everything from, Hypoglycemia, to low iron count from different people, but my food intake is pretty regular, and every time I go to the doc they say, Panic attack, panic attack, panic attack. I want an EKG pronto.

Answer:
It's definitely hypotension (aka low blood pressure). When you stand up, your heart is like, "whoa, I've gotta pump more blood now!" because it takes more effort to pump blood to parts of your body when you change position. This makes it "orthostatic hypotension." It's usually not too serious. Increase your fluid intake, because dehydration is a big cause. Have you changed your diet recently? Started exercising more? Lost a lot of weight? Even a new medication can interact with medications you were already taking, thus causing your hypotension. It's most certainly not a panic attack. Get a new doctor.

When you stand "up" the blood in the organs of your body pretty well stays "down" is why. Then the heart has to pump it up to the higher levels (in this case, your brain). To do this, it must RAISE the pressure, and raising the pressure means raising both the pulse rate AND the pulse PRESSURE. The raised pulse pressure is what the pounding in your chest feels. You probably don't notice the pulse rate rising, -but it does, -if you count it. It's not hypoglycemia. it's "orthostatic hypotension"... or at least that's what doctors call it to confuse you. All it means is the blood pressure falls below what's necessary, when you stand up. But if they said that, .... well, .. you'd know as much as they do, wouldn't you? (and we couldn't have THAT, could we? ! ! ! The Emperors having no clothes? Heaven Forfend!!) EDIT P.S. - Many doctors will prescribe you medications (particularly beta-blockers, but also BP -lowering pills) in the naive hope these will cure you, while in reality they're making the condition worse.

well usually when u stand up really fast...your blood pressure decreses rapidly so you get dizzy and lightheaded.....so try and get up slower and just taking thingsa little slower..C if that helps =)

It sounds like you could have what is known as 'orthostatic hypotension'. This means that you have low blood pressure, and when you stand up or change body position your heart has to suddenly pump harder in order to get the blood around your body because the mean pressure is not high enough. Go back to your doctor and ask to have your blood presure evaluated at sitting, lying and standing positions. Keep pushing until you get an answer other than 'panic attack', or if not at least ask your doctor to explain why he thinks that.
