Why is your HDL higher than your LDL?

My cholesterol LDL was 200 4 months ago and is now 61, my HDL is higher (63) than my LDL, is that strange?

  • My doctor tested my cholesterol in january, I am 55, dont smoke or drink, my TC was 276 now its 156, (down 56%) my triglyceride was 138 now its 161 (though i put that down to 25 grams of protein whey with cereals for breakfast), (+ 16%) HDL was 52 now its 63 (+21%) and my LDL was 200 now its down to 61 (-68%) though i have been tested every month, my second months drop was very significant.

  • Answer:

My guess is you are taking a statin.

That is wonderful! You want your HDL as high as it can be. This is your good cholesterol.

Kraton007, You give no indication of any reason that your levels are now reduced. Triglycerides are the storage form of fat in the body. When a man or a woman has an abdominal circumference greater than their hip circumference, this indicates excess stored triglycerides and probably excess blood triglycerides as well. In the blood triglycerides should not exceed 150 milligrams per decilitre on a 12-hour fasting specimen. When the level exceeds this limit the cardiovascular risk for the individual rises steadily to 500 milligrams per decilitre when the risk for other diseases such as a possible life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas called pancreatitis rises as well. Fasting levels of triglycerides over 1,000 milligrams per decilitre are considered a very serious risk for the heart and the pancreas and generally require medication. While medication may be used to reduce triglycerides, both diet and lifestyle have been shown to have a very significant effect on triglycerides and may reduce the amount of medication required or may allow, under a physician’s supervision, its discontinuation. For those who are overweight or obese with elevated triglycerides, reducing calories and losing weight may reduce triglycerides by 50 percent or more. For those 50 to 100 pounds above their ideal body weight even a modest weight loss of 10 to 20 pounds may have a significant impact on triglycerides levels. Exercise, even in the absence of weight loss, has a large impact on triglycerides. Daily walking may reduce triglycerides 30 to 40 percent. Those who have only one to two hours per week to exercise may find greater triglycerides reductions by spreading their exercise out over the week, engaging in some activity each day. If you just listen to the 'experts', you would think that cholesterol is an evil substance and that most of us would benefit from lowering our cholesterol as low as possible. But it's not so. Cholesterol is a vitally important substance which is used for building our cell membranes and producing several of our hormones. If our cholesterol level drops too low, we are actually at increased risk for depression and other problems. The information provided here should not be used during any medical emergency or for the diagnosis or treatment of any medical condition. Hey, there is currently an ad on TV in Australia about cholesterol and getting tested. If you look at the bottom of the ad you will see that it is sponsored by a pharmaceutical company. I wonder why? They make so much money from the drugs they sell to lower your cholesterol that there is a huge market for it. Cholesterol is natural in your body. Your body needs it to function properly. Your cholesterol level is determined by your lifestyle eg foods you eat, amount of exercise and so on. My father died at 40 even after medication and heart bypass surgury. Don't let the drug companies or doctors convince you to take any medication. They will try and confuse you with all those figures. Eat healthy whole foods (fruit & veg), drink plenty of water and walk. Avoid eating too much red meat and processed dairy foods, diet & fizzy drinks and over processed anything. My cholesterol is perfect. I am approaching 40 and I don't have a worry in the world. Can I suggest you see a naturopath instead.

From the above data your TC : HDL Chol was 5.30 : 1 and now TC : HDL is 2.47 : 1. The optimum TC : HDL Chol ratio is 3.0 & the average ratio is 4.0. So you are OK now. Triglyceride estimation on 12 hours fasting is mandatory, so higher results would be taken in to consideration of the fasting status.
