How long is recovery after open heart surgery on an infant?

What is the recovery time for triple bypass heart surgery?

  • Hi! My dad is about to have a triple bypass in about a week. He would like to know how long the recovery time would be and how soon can he get back to work. This is an elective surgery and not an emergency and he is fairly healthy. He is 47 yo and his doctor says he has a strong heart and has no trouble pumping blood. He does have Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure but have then under control. My dad is worried that his job might not take him back because he may be deemed unfit and that the recovery time might take too long. He is a Merchant Marine with a desk job and leads a fairly sedentary lifestyle. Also is it possible to ask the doctor to postpone the surgery for a couple months and have a minimal invasive surgery first or take medication until we can get things all sorted out. Or can we ask the doctor if we can choose angioplasty instead even though she said a bypass is the way to go? My dad doesn't suffer from angina or have difficulty breathing. He did feel it slightly one time when he had to climb up 5 flights of stairs. And my grandmother who lived with us just passed away about a month ago and we took her body back to her homeland so our financial resources are pretty much depleted. Answers and advice from doctors or surgeons or from people who also had bypass surgery are very much appreciated. Thank you!

  • Answer:

You need to ask the doctor these questions. Recovery time is usually about 6-8 weeks . It depends on if there are any complications. Heavy lifting is usually longer. With 3 arteries at least partially blocked. It is highly unlikely that the doctor would recommend angioplasty. Depending on how blocked the arteries are, ask the doc about medications. As for waiting for the surgery. Recovery time is a lot longer for a heart attack. That is IF there is a recovery. In the USA I haven't heard of anyone being fired for being off work for a disability. It is against Federal law to fire someone for a disability.Just make sure the paper work is done. FYI- Open heart surgery is really common today. The prognosis is good. Good luck Hope I was helpful

Had a triple bypass 4 weeks ago today. Will need another 6 to 8 weeks before thinking of returning to work. Need to do rehab, and incisions need to heal. Still not allowed to drive for another 4 weeks. They do cut the sternum open. They used both mammary arteries and saphenous veins from both legs. It is a very serious operation. Recovery is long. As a Merchant Marine, he is guaranteed right to return to his position, and his health insurance will pick up most of the cost. He will be home at least 10 weeks.
