Has anyone ever had a Cerebral Angiogram?

How does it feel to have an angiogram in the arm?

  • I am going to have an angiogram in my arm with a catheter in both my vein and artery in a couple of weeks. I am wondering if anyone has ever had one and can you tell me what to expect? How did it feel? Did you tolerate it well? I am nervous esp. since I cannot be sedated until they do the artery because they want to see how I do exercising on a bike. Thank you for your help.

  • Answer:

When I had my Angiogram before the operation, I was taken into the theatre and placed on the 'table', a nurse asked if I'd like a 'calmer' and I said 'Yes please'. A chap told me what they were going to do, and before long I was only mildly aware of my surroundings and going on, but was awake throughout. Afterwards the entry wound (wrist) was painful for while, and the arm was stiff a bit, but they did not last too long or bother me too much. So don't worry, they can give you sedation that works almost immediately nowadays. All the very best.

I had one in my groin and it was a bad day. It started with the just in case needle in the back of my hand that made me in a bad mood for a few hours till I went in and this man said do you wan a happy pill. A few minutes later I was happy then they did the angiogram which was painless and very interesting as I got to see the TV screen. With my heart pumping and regurgitating on camera. Then I had this nurse with a pad in her hand griping my groin for about 20 mins as they need to be sure the blood flow has stopped before they take out the just in case needle. I don't want any more but it was better than the other test the groin grabbing left bruises and the just in case needle did too..

I have had 14 angioplasties and angiograms in the last 11 years. The last three were through the radial artery. Recovery is quick and easier than through the groin.
