Is it unhealthy to have a very low resting heart rate?

Low resting heart rate?

  • I had a small procedure done today and the nurses and doctors were concerned about my resting heart rate before the procedure it was 52bpm after the procedure 48bpm I was told that, that is low and I should be going to my GP and having further tests done. I am wondering if this could be the cause of my constant fatigue? Has anyone else been through this? What could be causing it? I do exercise a lot and have noticed on the machines that my heart rate doesn't go up as high as it used to.

  • Answer:

A low resting rate is not a problem unless you also have low blood pressure. Fatigue can definitely be caused by low blood pressure, and this is not something to ignore - fatigue resulting from low blood pressure means that your body is getting insufficient oxygen, and kidneys don't function well with low pressure. There's a good chance that your thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones, so when you set up the appoint with your GP, you might also ask them to schedule a blood test that includes thyroid function a day or two ahead of time so you can discuss the test results with your doctor.

If you exercise a lot and have done so consistently for a long time, your lower heart rate may be due to an increased efficiency of the heart muscle. However, if you feel frequent fatigue in combination with a lower than average heart rate, there may be something else going on. It would be wise to get thoroughly checked out by a doctor.

Elf is right... exercising a lot increases the efficiency of your heart. I do cardio everyday at my heart rate at rest is 44bmp. I've never experienced any fatigue issues.. however, if you do, it's worth getting checked out. You mentioned that you exercise a lot.. do you get fatigued easily when you're exercising?
