Treadmill stress test for heart disease? I have been experiencing slight chest tightness but owing to?
-
diabetic and having a family history of heart problems, I went to my GP who in turn sent me for a Treadmill stress test ( I think also known as EKG). I thought I was doing well in the test, got tired as normal and could not experience any worsening of the chest tightness. The cardiologist and two nurses ( technicians) where present during the test. The nurses/technicians where monitoring me more directly and attending to the screen/monitor on the treadmill, whilst the cardiologist was sitting at a laptop ( I do not know if he working on the laptop had anything to do with my test). During the test the technicians told me that I was doing fine and that my heart was doing fine. However, on completion of the test, my cardiologist ran it by another senior consultant whose office was next door to his own office in the hospital, and he reported to me that the tests was positive. He said that he is setting up a angiogram that involves checking on the health of my heart blood vessels and that this will be done within the next two weeks. I found the news to be contrary to what the technicians told me during the actual test. Also, I was so shocked that I could think of asking the cardiologist more relevant questions. I did ask him how worried I should be and he said that my heart is strong and my diabetes is controlled so I am okay. On retrospect, this has confused me further. I am experiencing shoulder pain and sometimes ( especially when I am taking erectile dysfunction drugs, I experience serious pain in my left year and throat area. However,I always experienced shoulder/skeletal related shoulder pain- so you can understand how confused I am. How worried should I be? I am afraid that with the shoulder pain ( which seems to only come on when I sit in a certain position) persisting that I might get a heart attack before the angiogram is conducted. Should I rush myself to the hospital immediately? Anyone with any experience or knowledge on the subject please help- truly grateful?

Answer:
When you are sitting and having pain only sitting a certain way, tells me that you may have a nerve that is pinched, quite common. Go see a chiropractor and this will help that condition. This is getting to be a common type of problem with us that have diabetes, and watching what we eat. To much cholesterol. I would sit with my Dr. and find out exactly what meds I should be taking, and maybe not worry so much about sex at the present time, but just staying alive. When the test was going on, they said it was fine, meaning that your heart was functioning the way it should be. You may have a block in an artery and they are going to test to see if that is what is going on. If there is then they will do another procedure and clear out the blockage. Just had a friend go through this, he had 4 to work on, but he is doing wonderful now. So sit and go on line and study what all this medical terms mean to your situation and go from there.

An EKG is not a stress test. Learn what the differences are. You will be going for an angiogram. A possible angioplasty with stenting as well.

There does not appear from your story to be any evidence that you are currently getting crescendo angina, which is an emergency. Of course if you do get persistent pain and this is not relieved by your GTN you do need to see someone acutely.

Taking erectile dysfunction medicine with a diagnosis of diabetes can cause very serious problems. My suggestion would be to NOT take erectile dysfunction meds - especially if you are having these symptoms. If you are having pains, you should have somebody take you to the hospital or call 911 and have them send an ambulance. Let the doctors know what you have said here and what you are experiencing.
