It depends on the type of catheter. A foley catheter (bladder catheter) is removed in about 30 seconds so there is no need for any sedation. Non-tunneled vascular catheters like PICCs or central lines do not require sedation and are also removed in less than 1 minute. Epidural catheters can be removed very quickly and also don't require sedation. The only type of catheter that may require local anesthesia for removal is a tunneled catheter or port because it requires some dissection to remove the catheter that is tunneled.

Anesthesia is never used to remove any kind of catheter. They always come out much easier than when they go in.

Take into consideration that the majority of anesthesia is currently administered via intravenous catheter. So, no, anesthesia isn't used for catheter removal.

There is no way on this earth that they will give you anesthesia to remove a catheter. It only takes about 3 seconds to pull one out and actually, getting a shot hurts more and lasts longer. Don't stress about it, you'll be fine. Once its over, you'll wonder why you worried about it so much.
