Radiologic technology or diagnostic sonography?

Can I just go into a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program without completing a Radiology Tech. Program?

  • I am interested in going into a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. My concern is, do I need to complete the Radiology Technician Program prior to the DMS program? Because a few schools/medical center that offers the DMS Programs like the UCSD medical center, one of there prerequisites prior to getting into the DMS program requirements: Prerequisite #1 Candidates must be a graduate of a 2 year program in either Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Therapy or Nursing and passed the specific registry exam. After reading that, I was a bit confuse. My main career goal is to complete the DMS program. Will my chances of getting a career in DMS be higher if I were to complete a Rad Tech program and the DMS program, or can I just take the DMS porgram? I hope this all make sense.

  • Answer:

I previously asked a sonographer this and was told RT was not required before she entered her program. However, maybe the rules have changed since then. I guess you will just have to check with each school individually to see what they require.
