Why do I randomly have shortness of breath?

Why do i have shortness of breath on minimal exertion not cardiac related?

  • I was taken to the hospital with shortness of breath. Pulmonary embolism was ruled out, but the level of oxygen in the arterial blood gas is still below normal. The cardiology workup ruled out heart causes. However, I still have shortness of breath with minimal exertion even talking. They don't have an answer, any suggestions to guide me for further possibilities?

  • Answer:

If it is not your heart or your lungs, then that only leaves your muscles (neuromuscular disorders) and brain (psychosomatic problems). Nothing else can cause shortness of breath. Between them I would bet that your pulmonologist and cardiologist will figure this out. If you have your arterial blood gas result, then you could find out how to interpret it online (I used the interpreter at prognosis.org, but there are plenty of others)

Do you smoke? I have some SOB and I smoke often and a lot! Too much! Anything that is cardiac related would have shown up on an EKG Or Stress Test

Those are the first conditions to suspect when symptoms of shortness of breath are experienced. There can be several other reasons. To name a few: Anemia, environmental factors (allergies), allergic reactions to foods such as peanuts, eggs, milk and wheat; to insect bites or stings; and to certain medications and other allergens, asthma, bronchiectasis — widening and destruction of the large airways, chronic sinusitis, COPD, emphysema, generalized anxiety disorder, interstitial lung disease Pleural effusion, which occurs when fluid accumulates in the space that surrounds the lungs in the chest cavity. I imagine that several of these conditions would have been apparent when they checked your lungs and were ruled out. More rarely, hyperthyroidism can cause shortness of breath, but would present with other, probably more noticeable symptoms. I can only assume that this is a recent development. This might be a good time to write up your own medical history with particular reference to your present condition. See if there could have been any triggering factor involved. A change in your health, medications, diet, environment? Family health history as to shortness of breath? Do a little medical detective work on your own. As you can see there are many conditions that can present with "shortness of breath". Your investigation could pay off and be of great assistance in helping your doctor help you. Good luck.

The only things that I can think of (or actually know about) as a cause of shortness of breath are pneumonia, anxiety/panic attacks, allergies, chronic bronchitis or asthma, side effects of medication, excess weight, blood disorders, emphysema, air pollution such as exposure to alot of dust or fumes. You can also go online to The Lung Association website for more information about lung/breathing disorders......however......the most important thing right now is to get a diagnosis. You may want to check with another pulmonologist or cardiologist or internist for a second opinion or even a third. If I see a doctor and cannot get a definitive answer to something unusual going on with my health........I have gone for a second or third opinion. Even if the second opinion agrees with the first one.....I feel better knowing I did all that I could. Don't give up until someone can help you. Good luck. Hope you get some answers.

This happened to my wife. We went to our family physician and he didn't know so we went to a cardiologist and he said that her heart was in good condition. He referred us to a pulmonary specialist. The specialist stated that she has pulmonary hypertension. She is now on oxygen. I would suggest to make an appointment with a pulmonary specialist.

The underlying cause for labored breathing should be found out and treated.
