What are the new problems regarding drug-eluting stents?

Question regarding High blood pressure and heart health?

  • I have had a heart murmur since childhood (21 now). Recently I had to get my dads cardiologist to sign off for me to get oral surgery as a result. Since childhood ive had higher blood pressure but the doctors never wanted to put me on medication due to its side effects. Anyway I havent seen this cardiologist since i was 18 so he wanted to get a ekg in the office to clear me for my surgery. He told me that my heart rate was rather high and that I have high blood pressure 160/90 and that I have to go back in a few weeks (after my oral surgery this week so i can heal) to get more testing. He then told me that I most likely need medication or ill be lucky to live to 40. My Dads side of the family has major heart problems. Father for example (age 60) has 14 stents 9 heart attacks and a pace maker and defibulator. He also has high BP. Im relatively healthy although i do smoke and am about 10 lbs over weight. My question is what could be causing my high blood pressure and high heart rate and what tests will he be performing. I have had the nuclear stress test and others (age 18 then). I do get shortness of breath at times, dizziness, chest pain and fluttering periodically. *I wasn't scared or nervous and have had it checked since and its pretty consistent* Thanks in advance

  • Answer:

The murmur is probably causing chronic tachycardia (fast heart rate). The high heart rate could very well be to blame for the high blood pressure. The problem isn't that your arteries are clogged, such as with someone with high cholestrol. Your problem is that, with the high heart rate, your heart muscle could actually wear out more quickly than it should. They will most likely put you on a low-dose beta blocker to lower your heart rate, and it'll also bring your pressure down to normal. You may be on this med for the rest of your life, but the side effects are generally mild, if there are any at all. Also, being on meds definitely beats the alternative. :)
