How long is recovery after open heart surgery on an infant?
-
My daughter will be having her ASD/VSD repaired soon. She is 2 months old and will be fixed via open heart surgery. Please give any information that you find fit. Thanks!

Answer:
Congenital heart defect corrective surgeries fix or treat heart defects that a child is born with. A baby born with heart defects has congenital heart disease . Surgery is needed if the defects are dangerous to the child’s health or well-being. Most children who have open-heart surgery need to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) for 2 to 4 days right after surgery. They usually stay in the hospital for 5 to 7 more days after they leave the ICU. Stays in the intensive care unit and the hospital are usually shorter for patients who have closed-heart surgery. When your child is discharged from the hospital, parents and caregivers are taught what activities are okay for their child to do, how to care for the incision, and how to give medicines their child may need. Your child needs at least several more weeks at home to recover. Talk with your doctor about when your child can return to school or daycare.Your child will need follow-up visits with a cardiologist (heart doctor) every 6 to 12 months. Your child may need to take antibiotics before going to the dentist for teeth cleaning or other dental procedures, to prevent serious heart infections. Ask the cardiologist if this is necessary.Take care Always.

hello, My son aiden is 14 months old he has HRHS, truicuspid atresia, vsd, asd and pulmonary stenosis. He had the BT shunt put in a few days after birth. he was in for 11 days, he just had the glenn operation april of this year he was in for 5 days. It just depends. During the recovery process things could happen to make the stay shorter or longer... Aiden's first surgery was a bit longer b/c he was only 4 days old and was having a few problems... Good Luck, and if u need to talk about heart stuff and u have a facebook u can add me Kristina Michele Daugherty... There are sooo many other parents on facebook with heart warriors... Us heart mommies gotta support each other....

Over the years, kids, including babies, never ceased to amaze me how fast they bounce back. Of course it depends on many factors but, in general, for a VSD/ASD repair I've seen many kids standing in their cribs the next day. Of course for a two month old I wouldn't expect her to be standing but you know what I mean.
