Why are my triglycerides too low?

Please Help! My triglycerides are sky high! Why is this?

  • About 6 months ago I had a lab test, and my cholesterol was about 200, HDL, and LDL were perfect, but my triglycerides were 970! I was started on a high dose of Vytorin, and several months later my triglycerides came down to about 485. Well, I just had another blood test yesterday, and my triglycerides are back up to 587. My cholesterol is 169 and the other tests are completely in normal range. I am not overweight, and eat a pretty healthy diet. Could this be hereditary? My aunt also has high triglycerides, but her other lipids are normal. Any good suggestions on what I should do? I see the dr. on Monday. Thanks in advance!

AHA Recommendation — Dietary treatment goals Changes in lifestyle habits are the main therapy for hypertriglyceridemia. These are the changes you need to make: If you're overweight, cut down on calories to reach your ideal body weight. This includes all sources of calories, from fats, proteins, carbohydrates and alcohol. Reduce the saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol content of your diet. Reduce your intake of alcohol considerably. Even small amounts of alcohol can lead to large changes in plasma triglyceride levels. Be physically active for at least 30 minutes on most or all days each week. People with high triglycerides may need to substitute monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats —such as those found in canola oil, olive oil or liquid margarine — for saturated fats. Substituting carbohydrates for fats may raise triglyceride levels and may decrease HDL ("good") cholesterol in some people. Substitute fish high in omega-3 fatty acids instead of meats high in saturated fat like hamburger. Fatty fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Do this::::: Eat no dairy products forever. Eat no meat. Period. None means 'zero'. Go to a vitamin store near you [VitaminWorld is located in my city] and purchase:: GARLIC:::: 5,000 mg/gelcap Take 2 twice a day [yes, that is 20,000 mg a day!][2 in the morning, 2 in the evening] [you can order it below if you like. They have a sale: buy 1, get 1 or 1/2 off] Not only will your triglycerides plummet, but your cholesterol will decrease also [below 150 is ideal]. You will see results in 10 days - 2 weeks. Maybe sooner. Any doctor will tell you what I have said is outrageous. They want you to take medicine that they get commission for with each perscription. Please do what I say. Natural is best. It works.

highTriglycerides can be hereditary just like cholesterol. I would suggest asking your dr. about a low-fat diet, and maybe Omegga-3.. be sure to follow up with doc.good luck, get those levels down, when they are way high,it can cause a MI, and or stroke.

I have high triglycerides and it is genetics. My father had a heart attack several years ago. He and my mother were at their retirement cottage on Lake Huron near Tawas, Michigan. Because it was stormy they could not send a helicopter out. The ambulance took him 90 miles to the hospital where he underwent a quadruple by-pass. Unfortunately, they did not keep him sedated enough, and he tore the staples out of his chest and died. I'm glad you brought this matter up. If start swimming and cycling more and cut out the drinking I can pull my level down to 150. Check this source out below. There's a chart you might find useful.

Please do share withl me yours best findings, as I am also suffering from Hypertriglycerdemia. Have 450 counts in my blood report, whereas my LDL and HDL are normal and total count of Cholestrol is 192. If I can reduce this factor, the total Cholestrol count may come down to 130. [email protected]

When my triglycerides were 500 the doc gave me a medicine called Tricor. ( I think Tricor is for people who have high cholesterol as well so it may not be suitable for you.) I tested again three days later after using Tricor and they were normal again. I think triglycerides come from eating vegetable fats (not sure about that) and high carbohydrates. Below is a link to the only page I know of that has any useful information about it. http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4778
