Is it unhealthy to have a very low resting heart rate?

What does a low resting heart rate but high blood pressure mean?

  • ....as opposed to high resting heart rate and high blood pressure? I realize I have high blood pressure in my family. But I have a consistent resting heart rate of 60-62 while having prehypertension blood pressure of 131/80 (average over about 6 different measurements taken throughout the day). And I always thought high blood pressure would mean high resting heart rate as the heart would have to work harder to pump blood. Some side information: I am 30 years old, exercise regularly (can do about 150 pushups), eat a balanced diet (no high salt foods either), and am of normal BMI (165 pounds, 6 feet tall = about 22 BMI). What is likely going on here...and is there any way to treat it IE different types of exercise, certain types of fruits and vegetables (and not just fruits and vegetables in general), etc.?

  • Answer:

A pulse rate is the number of times the heart beats. It is usually measured per minute. A low pulse rate is sometimes medically referred to as bradycardia. It has a few different causes. It may not always indicate a problem or medical conditions. The pulse rate generally increases during times of physical exertion, fear or pain. It normally decreases at rest and during sleep. In people with high levels of daily exercise, it is commonly seen that the blood pressure is higher than normal, yet the resting pulse rate is very low. Very low pulse rate is also a symptom for bradycardia; it can occur along with symptoms like weakness, fatigue or breathlessness. It can also be caused by low metabolism, prolonged bed rest, autoimmunity or neurological disorders. Hypertension is caused by stress, diseases like diabetes, malfunctioning of the kidneys, hormonal disorders or other cardiovascular disorders. Take care now & always........
