What's the difference between smooth ER and rough ER?

Whats the difference between glipizide and glipizide er?

  • I was taking glipizide and now a different dr. has prescribed glipizide er.

  • Answer:

Micksmixxx is correct. The ER suffix on all drugs means extended (slow) release. I would add that you should read as much as you can about sulfonylureas, though. Continuing the diet you're on and taking Glipizide raises your chances of having to take insulin and contributes to heart problems down the road.... quite significantly, as a matter of fact. Type twos should be well schooled in this stuff before their doctor ever prescribes these powerful and debilitating drugs. Even Metformin, as seemingly innocuous as it is, has undesirable (seldom mentioned) effects. Frankly, these things scare me as they should scare you. I would further suggest that you learn from someone who was on diabetes drugs for years and found their way off of them... me. I quit all of them in December and my blood glucose remains normal. Not only that, my energy and health have improved noticeably. How do I do it? Here's a synopsis of what I've learned: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html

The difference between Glipizide and Glipizide ER is that the ER variant is "extended release". It works exactly the same as the 'normal' Glipizide, but over a longer period of time. It's from a group of drugs called sulfonylureas (oral blood-glucose-lowering drugs) which work by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin.
