What's the best wireless insulin pump?

Information about insulin pump?

  • I've had some issues with depression and taking my insulin and checking my blood sugar like I should. I've been in the hospital for DKA twice this year. Now that my depression is under control, I care about taking care of myself again and I'm trying really hard. I take all of my insulin like I should, but I can't get my blood sugar to a decent level. My doctor says that my the amount of insulin I'm taking is right, so they just don't believe that I'm taking it. I've switched to another insulin pen and everything (thinking that maybe that pen was bad) but nothing changed. I understand that it could take a little while to get everything under control again, but until then I just want to stay out of the hospital. That's where the pump comes in. I've heard from numerous people that it pretty much saved their lives, yet my doctor said I have a better chance of DKA on the pump. But I still want to try it. I'm 18, and sometimes when I go out to eat with friends or something, taking insulin just slips my mind. I just started trying a few weeks ago (when I got out of the hospital) and he seems to think everything will be fine when I get into the rhythm of doing this stuff constantly, but I just don't want to slip up once or twice and almost die again. Should i see another doctor, or just wait 4 months until I go back to my doctor to bring it up again? Also, can anyone tell me what it's actually like to wear the pump all of the time? Does it get in the way and how much does it show? Is showering effected by it? Thanks. =]

  • Answer:

Patients are generally not started on insulin pumps when their diabetes is not under control, in fact in people your age (normally a little younger like 15-17) getting a pump can actually be a reward for maintaining their insulin regime. As hard as it is, you are diabetic and at the moment, nothing can ever change that. So forgetting a dose is something you should try not to do. The more insulin doses you forget and the more non-compliant you are, you do become insulin resistive and I dare say thats what is going on now, if your sugars are running high, but you are taking the correct insulin its because you have recently been DKA and not taking your insulin, it will take your body awhile to get back to the gist of things. Wearing a pump is pretty easy, it easily slips into pockets or inbetween boobs if you are wearing a dress. Hopefully once you get your sugars undercontrol and your doctors are sure you will remain compliant you will be able to get switched to a pump. They are great little devices, much easier than needling every day, in my opinion any way. I'd wait til you go back in four months, get back on the needling regime, once your doctor sees you can cope and are compliant, I am sure he/she will be more accepting to putting you on a pump.

The insulin pump was pretty much my lifesaver. It's not annoying at all to wear it all the time. You never feel the site unless you accidentally put it in muscle tissue (same with the pen). There are three popular pumps in the US: Minimed by medtronic, Animas One Touch by Animas and the Omnipod. The minimed currently dominates the market because you can get a CGM(continuous glucose monitor) with it. The animas comes with a One Touch meter that communicates with the pump so you can check and bolus right from it (advantage if you wear a dress). The omnipod is a pump site that is also the pump. All the bolusing is from a small handheld device. Both the animas and the Omnipod are waterproof, so showering or accidentally jumping into a pool with it on is no problem. The minimed, however, is not waterproof. It is water resistant, but cover it well in heavy rain.
