Diabetes is a collection of diseases that leads to high blood sugar. If you have uncontrolled high blood sugar over time, it could cause organ damage like kidney failure, eye problems, and nerve problems. For type I diabetes, it is very difficult to prevent, because it is the combination of genetic factors and environmental factors often beyond your control (like infections and even the weather). Your grandmother probably has type I diabetes, although 20 years old is on the older end to get type I diabetes. Type II diabetes, on the other hand, is quite preventable. Prevention involves getting lots of exercise, making sure your weight is in the healthy range, and not eating too many sugars and starches (potatoes/bread/pasta). Of course, as with many diseases, age is a huge risk factor. So, don't worry too much about it, but try to maintain a healthy lifestyle when you can.

Diabetes has a genetic component which is responsible for passing this gene on to your family members. If both your Mom and Dad have it your chances are increased but keeping your weight down and watching what you eat, low carbs, no high fat should help you from a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. You have a slight risk for it since your paternal grandmother had it but if you take preventative care you should be fine. There are some who say that diabetes does skip a generation but this may not be altogether true. Type 1 is where the body makes no insulin and this can also be genetic too but not preventable by diet and exercise. Most cases are detected in early childhood. Insulin injections are the treatment and must be given as prescribed by the doctor. Again, you need to watch your diet and exercise in order to prevent unstable blood sugar levels with type 1 too. Diabetes mellitus is a condition which is characterized by presence of abnormally high blood sugars. The normal fasting blood glucose of blood sugar is between 77mg/dl to 100mg/dl. If your blood sugars are higher at fasting than this you could be having unstable blood sugars and need to be tested for diabetes. The symptoms of diabetes mellitus include increased thirst, increased frequency of passing urine, visual impairment, exessive eating, weight loss or inability to put on weight, wound healing impairment and when not treated properly may result in symptoms of kidney failure and blindness. Watching your diet, regular exercises and frequent monitoring of blood glucose can keep blood glucose levels stable in a type 2 diabetic or prevent early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Hope this helps.

You can help to prevent diabetes by eating whole foods and limiting your intake of processed foods. Make sure your diet is rounded and you get enough carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Exercise every day and get regular check-ups and blood tests with a doctor. That being said, sometimes people just "get" diabetes. I come from a long line of non-diabetics, I'm a whole food vegan, I exercise every day, I'm not overweight and I'm not unhealthy, but my cells simply do not respond to insulin, making me insulin resistant and reactive hypoglycemic, which makes me very much at risk for type 2 diabetes. Sometimes, there's nothing you can do.

Diabetes comes comes in 2 forms-Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 happens when the pancreas stops producing insulin and insulin must be supplemented. Type 2 occurs when a person becomes overweight and the body cells become insulin resistant requiring more insulin. Type 2 diabetes is 90% preventable with proper diet and some exercise. Here is a good plan 1. Eat 5 to 6 small fist sized meals throughout the day. Every 3 hours is ideal. 2. Eat lean proteins like lean red meat, chicken, fish, beans, eggs etc. Add complex carbs to the meals like salads, nuts, steamed veggies, and fruit. 3. Exercise at least 15 minutes 3 times a week. Eating the right foods every 2 or 3 hours will balance your insulin levels and keep you from gaining weight.

Eliminate as many processed carbohydrates as possible. Don't eat carbohydrates 2 hours before bedtime. Balance your fat/carbos/protein in a roughly 30/40/30 ratio (this is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule--it doesn't work for everyone). Eat at least 5 or 6 small meals a day. Always eat a high-protein breakfast.

If it's type 1 diabetes then there is NO prevention, it just happens, there's no cause. It's a myth that eating too much sugar causes type 1 diabetes. If it's type 2 diabetes then make sure u eat appropriate amounts of food and exercise regular. Make sure u are the correct weight for ur age and height and your not overweight or obese Atlanta xx

Watch your weight and maintain a healthy one, go easy on sweets, sugary drinks included and spread your meals and snacks to eat a little every 3 hours. Walk at least 3 miles every day.
