Can I drink if you have diabetes?

I have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes ... can I drink diet sodas?

  • I have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Can anyone tell me if I can drink diet sodas? I've been getting conflicting answers from the Internet and others that I have talked to and I'm trying to find out if it may be the reason why my blood sugar is not going down as quickly as I'd like. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Most diet sodas have no carbohydrates and so they won't raise your blood sugar levels. I don't know why anyone would tell a diabetic to avoid diet soda, unless they're just fear mongering about the dangers of aspartame. Aspartame is perfectly safe. In fact, there have been more studies of aspartame than almost anything else we consume. Enjoy your diet soda and make sure to check the carbohydrate count on the back. Although most are zero carb, some do have sugar.

Diet soda is perfectly fine for diabetics. The only thing I would add to the above comment from TOE is that you should drink regular soda or something with sugar in it if you are having a low blood sugar.

Yes, you can drink diet soda, and diet iced tea etc. Those beverages have no carbs so they would not effect your blood sugar. You can try not drinking diet drinks and see if there's any change in your blood sugar, but all water all day would get a little tiresome.

You can safely eat/drink anything that is low in carbohydrates.
