What is your choice of a fast-acting treatment?

What do you use to treat a low? What's that choice based upon? When we're home I do strawberry milk (two birds w/ one stone kind of logic). I carry a tube of frosting and PB crackers for when we're out (she hates those gel tabs). I've been criticized for the frosting. Not terribly, I'm over it, and it was only on here, but I'm curious on what others use. I'm always open to improved practices. At least for now it's effective, fast, and there's little resistance. Kids are not cooperative when they're low, especially at midnight.

OJ when I'm at home and pop when I'm not at home. They're 2 of the fastest things that work for me. I very rarely have a low when I'm not at home, and when I do its usually right before lunch/dinner, so when I'm low I just treat it with lunch or dinner (depending on the time of the day) Before I get thumbs down for treating the lows I get before lunch/dinner (and having people say I should treat them immediately) I should say that those lows are literally right before dinner...5-10 minutes after I test, dinner would be done, and I'd be eating. If my lows were in the 40's or low 50's, then yeah I'd treat them quickly. If they're in the 60's or 70's (I know 70 isnt low, but after being out all day and walking around, 70's will feel low) then I'll wait a few minutes to treat it.

For a kid, I'd use Smartees...they are as close to Glucose tabs as you can get. The problem with the milk is that it takes a while to digest, so getting the blood sugar higher takes longer and it could be OVER treated, as well, causing a high blood sugar later in the day. Personally, I prefer the glucose tabs because they are low calories with the grams of carbs needed to treat lows.

Fun Size packs of Skittles. Each packet is a perfect 16g of carb, and chewing on them before I swallow gives the fruit juices a chance to absorb through my membranes into my system fast. Plus they never melt and they last forever. I have them sitting around everywhere! You can get them at Halloween and Easter, and I stock up on several bags to get me through the year.

I like juice at home and soda or glucose tabs when I'm out. The frosting thing is a good idea and I've heard of a lot of people using that.

A few spoons of glucose powder in water, or 200 mls of Lucozade if I'm at home, or 3 or 4 Dextrosol (glucose) tablets if I'm away from home. Sadly, due to hypoglycaemia [hypoglycemia, if you're American] unawareness, it's not often that I'm aware of hypos. The first I usually know of one is after someone has given me a glucagon injection and I'm 'coming round'. Edit: I forgot to mention that I always follow up with something more substantial once I'm recovered too as sweet things tend to have a short life span. You're as likely to find your blood sugar level falling again soon after if you don't take something that takes a while to be broken down.

i just grab whatevers close to me like anything but when im home i like juice or cereal. but at like school i usully just eat some of my lunch or have a juice box

I eat Skittles (who don't like them?) or I keep a bag of mini canybars like 3 musketeers handy.

I only use sugar if I get low very quickly. And then I only use a very little bit. Usually, since I know when I'm going low, I use some carbs like peanut butter and graham crackers or granola bars. My doctor and nutritionist really frown on using too much sugar for a low unless it is an absolute emergency because it spikes the blood sugar and then can drop quickly . If you need a quicky at night, OJ is a lot better than frosting. At least it has some nutritional value
