Can I drink if you have diabetes?

Can I still drink alcohol if I have diabetes?

  • I'm going to the Doctors because I think I might have Diabetes and I was wondering if I can still drink at the weekends if it turns out I do? I tend to binge drink, but would this be ok I if drink spirits with diet juice like diet coke? I also smoke will this effect diabetes?! P.s I know I smoking and binge drinking are bad for me but hey I'm young so no lectures please! :-)

  • Answer:

Having diabetes increases the risk you have for a future cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke. Smoking further increases this risk so it is advisable to try and stop. Alcohol can interact with some medications used to treat diabetes and cause serious problems. Make sure you admit how much you drink to your doctor so he knows what medications may be better suited for you.

I pity your poor doctor he is going to have his work cut out re-educating you. Smoking effect everything for the worse as does alcohol. You may be allowed some very moderae drinking, it depends on what problems you have. Alcohol and caffeinne effect your blood sugar so you have to be careful with them.

You are not very restricted on alcohol with diabetes. You should follow the US recommendation of a 2 drink maximum to avoid any complications. With diabetes, there is a chance that you get low blood sugar from alcohol drinking.

With diabetes comes a butt load of responsibility, and diabetes can cause kidney complications. As you probably know, so does drinking. Diabetes restricts a lot of drinking. And it is not reccomended

Fatty deposits in your arteries are accelerated when you smoke. You could say that smoking provide the "glue" that helps these fatty deposits stick to the artery sides. When you are diabetic, the excess sugars in the blood calcify the fatty deposits. In other words, instead of soft flexible deposits attaching to the walls of your arteries, you now have hard calcium like deposits stuck to a flexible medium (the artery walls) when normal fatty deposits break free from the artery walls, it is easily absorbed into the body or even re-atteches somewhere else. When the harder calcium like deposits breaks away from the walls of the artery it is NOT absorbed or re-attached somewhere else. This piece of hard stuff travels in your blood stream, damaging valves, blood vessel sides as far as it goes. When entering the heart it can really do a lot of damage, depending on the size of this clump of hardened fatty stuff. Now why would you want to add to this danger by providing the glue? (smoking) And, yes, smoking DOES effect diabetes. As far as your drinking goes, why bother mixing your spirits with anything? Why not drink it straight up and since you are binge drinking, why bother with glasses? Drink straight out of the bottle, why waste energy pouring the drink, when you can have it faster and stronger? You want to do bad things, you are young and "invincible" why not go the whole 9 yards and do it properly? At least this way you will kill yourself quicker and since you are young, remove you from the gene pool before you actually reproduce. Come to think of it, why not kill yourself and get it over with, why prolong the agony? Yes you can drink when diabetic, however it is your choice. The decision is choosing between life and death. Do you prefer to live or die? Your choice, make it and stick to it. BTW, this is not a lecture, you asked for my opinion and I gave it.
