What are the bioethical issue of insulin?

Are there any good solutions to make me want to do my insulin?

  • Im a diabetic, female, 17, have had diabetes since i was 8, i just want to be like everyone else. Taking my insulin when i need to seems to be a daily problem. I forget, or I only eat once or twice a day and not on a set schedule, i take my bed time (long acting) insulin religously, there is no issue with that one. Its just during the day. I cant seem to focus enough to pay attention at the fact that if i dont stop this i could face BIG challenges here soon. Any Help or Suggestions would be much appriciated. Also please feel free to email me - [email protected] Instant message

to not be different when we are is a hard thing at 17 but your need for insulin is so much greater than fitting in if you could see what happens inside the body (ketosis) when we need insulin the body turns on it's self the need for water becomes great the need to urinate and the vomiting all ways the body is trying to tell you it needs insulin if you do not get it you DIE one shot a couple times a day wow such a small thing for a great reason life.think of how many cancer patients would change places with you.I really don't mind my shots they keep life real for me and makes me remember life is worth a moments [email protected]

Have you discussed this issue with your endo? Have you considered a pump - that is always with you so you can't forget your insulin! Perhaps you need a physical reminder l like a med alert bracelet or write it on the palm of your hand. Ask a best friend to remind you. At 17, you really should be much more responsible. An 8 year old forgets, a 17 year old is just being immature (sorry, I know that sounds harsh). You are pretty much an adult and are responsible for you own well-being. Look online for attractive cases for your insulin stuff so that may encourage you to have it with you all the time. Keep a small notebook in your bag or purse that you write in what you ate, when you ate, how much insulin you took, and what your blood sugar level was before eating (and perhaps a few readings an hour or two later). Reward yourself with a pedicure or a manicure or something like that if you stay keep this for four days in a row. Set goals of lower blood sugar at dinner (or where ever there is a problem). Look for patterns of lows or highs and set a plan of attack. If you have a goal and a reward for it perhaps this will motivate you more than some vague idea of problems in the future. Also, know that you will just feel better from head to toe if your blood sugar is close to normal!

I found that if I don't check my sugar and give myself insulin as necessary, there's a good chance I will die. I was fortunate enough to be diagnosed with Type1 when I was 24. I can't tell you how I would have handled it at your age but you need to be diligent in taking care of yourself. Just think of how proud you will be forty years from now, knowing that you took control of your life and managed your diabetes properly. I just hope you start taking care of yourself before it's too late. The better you manage this disease now, the better off you will be in the future. Hope this helps out a little.

As Noccie suggests, have you looked into an insulin pump? Your endo might want you to work up to that...mine wanted me to be comfortable testing 4x a day religiously, because with a pump you have to test about 6-8x a day. But you would love it! You can set it to beep at different times a day to remind you to give yourself a bolus (dose of insulin), and it's perfect for erratic schedules. You can even skip a meal if you need to because you can set a custom baseline pattern to keep you stable even without eating. I went through what you did at your age...you want to be normal like everyone else, but I think you're coming to the realization that you're NOT like everyone else. It's a hard realization, and yet it's also empowering, because now you realize that only you can manage your diabetes, only you can control your destiny.

I havent been taking care of my diabetes for the ast couple of years. and when i found out that my a1c was 8.2 i thought when i reach the age of say 40 or 50, i dont want to be blind, have a limb or two cut off, or suffer from the numerous complications caused by ignored diabetes. Well Katiepoo 1/3 of type 1 diabetics die before age 55. So if you want to surpass this age you must keep a tighter control on your glucose level. So were all leaving it up to you. There is a song that goes like that. Yes it is a pain in the patute , but if you get into a routine , then the drudgery goe out of it.Please think hard on this and make taking the insulin almost as natural as breathing. You can do it . Go for it>

That's a tough one. Juvenile diabetes is different than Adult Onset, which is caused by lifestyle. Yet the same methods that are used to slow or prevent Adult Onset Diabetes may be helpful in controlling Juvenile. Check out the Raw Food way. You'll still be weird, but healthy weird. Insulin once a day at night is a reasonable goal.
