I am Type 2 diabetic but have no motivation to get better. I don't exercise or eat right. Why don't I care?
-
I feel tired all the time. I have insulin which takes my sugar down into the 200s but no lower. I eat rice, potatoes, cakes, cookies, drink soda, all of those high GI foods, and I know it is hurting me, but I can't get motivated to eat right or exercise. What is wrong with me? I am (unhappily) married but have kids. I just have no motivation to really do all the many things I would need to do - medicine (no insurance, no job), exercise and, most of all, diet - in order to keep my diabetes under control. I feel lost and out of control.

Answer:
You sound very discouraged and depressed. If you are not concerned about your health, please look at your children and know that they depend on you and love you. Do it for them, if not for yourself. If your marriage is the cause of your problem, then do something about it. If you think that it is because you are depressed, then there are some good medications out there that can help. Talk to your doctor. Only you can take control of your diabetes and your life. My husband and I are both diabetics. It is a struggle everyday to say the least, but because my husband was not motivated to keep his blood glucose in control he now has stage 3 renal failure, with stage 5 being complete renal failure. His kidneys could fail at anytime. He also has high blood pressure, which goes against his kidneys. He has CAD, already had a 90% heart blockage, had to have a stent. He has neuropathy of the feet, caused from very high blood glucose readings for a long time. This is very painful. It keeps him awake at night. He also has bleeding behind his eyes, which can cause blindness. Do you want all this for your life? You may say, oh this won't happen to me, so did my husband, but it has. I am not scolding you, just trying to open your eyes to the future of what lies ahead for you, if you do not take care of yourself. You can live with this for awhile, but the quality of your life will not be good at all. You will suffer much, just like my husband is now. Honey, you need to get up off the couch and exercise. Walking is a good way to bring you glucose numbers down, and that won't cost you anything ,but a little of your time. Since you have no insurance, walking may help you to cut back on your insulin, which helps you save on your drug cost. This will also help with depression. Then get all those cakes, cookies and things you know is bad for you out of the house and don't buy anymore! If you don't have them, you can't eat them. Your diet, as you know is very important when it comes to keeping your blood glucose under control. Watch your portion sizes, measure your veggies. Eat only one, 1/2 cup starchy vegetable at a meal ( corn or potatoes or beans....). Low fat milk, green veggies are very important such as green beans, small salad. Low fat meats ( about the size of a deck of cards, cooked ). 100% whole wheat bread. White bread is bad for diabetics. Oats are filling, and is good for a diabetic. My husband lost 65lbs and I lost 28lbs in less than a year on this diet. We count carbs, portion sizes, measure all veggies, drink low fat buttermilk or 1% sweet milk each meal. I hope something I said will help you to understand that you are important. You are precious. The Lord gave you life. He wants you to take care of that life and live as long as you can. Good luck. I hope this will help. My heart goes out to you and all diabetics that struggle everyday. I sure hope you have a blessed day.

maybe you're depressed? You should really talk to your doctor about this, and maybe see a therapist: you're pretty much committing long-term suicide by doing those things.

Sounds like you might be depressed, please talk to your doctor, and if it persists or has persisted for a month or more you probably need medication. In the mean time, Who is going to take care of your children if you go blind, develop heart disease, lose a limb, have a stroke, or end up in a coma? You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else. Keep the rice, potatoes, cakes, cookies, sugary sodas and high GI food out of the house. If it isn't there you won't eat it. Your children don't need these kinds of things at all, and certainly not every day. If you cannot conscience them not recieving junk food, make it a once a week treat, with no left overs. I have Diabetes too, and I have banned junk food from my house, because I cannot say no if it is there tempting me. It was rough the first couple weeks, but now my daughter grabs an apple or other fruit if she wants something sweet. Now she prefers the healthy food to junk food.

just try going through the motions. i'm a type 1. i went to college, i got out of shape AND out of control. so i started running. the first day i ran, i ran a quarter of a mile. and i walked back. and then i laid on the couch panting for half an hour. after that it got easier and i started to enjoy it and look forward to it. another thing you might want to consider is get happy with your life. no insurance means its tough to get counseling, but you could journal or talk to a friend. if you're happy with your life, you're more likely to take care of it.

Think about how much worse your life will be after you have both your feet amputated. Not kidding, ask your doc, that's what will happen if you don't lstart controlling your disease.

I'm so sorry. I can't offer much advice but I can relate to what you're saying. I'm in the same boat. Sometimes I think I have a death wish!! I just checked my sugar and it is 286. But I'm sure I'll be stuffing my face again before bed with anything and everything I damn well want to eat, regardless of carb or sugar content. I understand you don't have insurance and it is expensive to go to the doc and have your A1C and everything else checked, but please try to at least do that. I'm forcing myself to go next Friday. Hopefully your doctor can offer up some more advice and give you some information to get started on a decent diet and exercise plan. Good luck to you. We can do this!!!

You probably feel depressed because you are not able to do anything about being diabetic. You may not also believe subconsciously that diet or exercise can actually help you. However, this is further from the truth. You will need to address these negative beliefs. If you can think about posting on this forum, then it is easy to see that you are interested to seek help. Start with reading more about your condition. There are many sites around about diabetes.
