I have to go to the doctors tomorrow for a blood test , A fasting sugar test so i need to fast but?
-
my doctor never said how long to fast for i've just had tea and biscuits and won't eat or drink anything else until tomorrow when i've had my blood taken the appointment is at 9.15am is this enough fasting over 13 hours i cant phone the doctors for advice as it's 8.20 pm and the surgery is closed this test is being done because a normal blood test came back with very high levels of sugar and my father was a diabetic they are just checking ,so do you think 13 hours is enough time to fast.

Answer:
13 hours is too long. For any fasting, it is usually 8 hours. So, nothing after midnight, nothing when you get up in the morning.

I had a blood test yesterday and was told to not to eat and to drink only water for 12 hours, but that was for a cholesterol test

The usual advice is to fast from midnight.

it is enough time to fast, infact you can still have something else before 10pm tonight, tomorrow morning you can only drink water or black tea with no sugar. If you are a smoker do not smoke before the blood test as it affects the levels, after your first blood test you will have to drink some lucozade and wait 2 hours for the next blood test - this is to see the level of your sugar after the drink and on how quick it rises. If the results come back as diabetes you will get a blood test every 6 months and you will get an appointment for the podiatrist and the dietitian every year and the renal specialist for your eyes.

A fasting blood test means not having your breakfast before having this blood test,so not having anything after 12midight,I had this test done to see if I was diabetic( I was)..you could always take a couple of biscuits with you if want or just go home and have your breakfast which I did ,but then I had to go back 2 hours after to do another blood test to see what my sugar levels were after eating breakfast, hope this helps annd good luck

A fasting blood test would mean you not eating overnight, my friend, so 13 hours would be sufficient. The pathology laboratory that I use has a continually running video within the department indicating that they prefer someone who is to have a fasting blood test should not have eaten over the previous 10 hours. As J B states, you should NOT have anything to eat or drink, except for plain water, prior to the blood test being carried out. I wish you well, dear lady.

Fasting means 8 hours or somewhat longer, depending on your appointment time. Fasting is routinely done as part of blood tests. If your father is diabetic they need to know that and should always be included in your history.
JB is correct.

Mea, Fasting blood sugar (FBS) measures blood glucose after you have not eaten for at least 8 hours. It is often the first test done to check for prediabetes and diabetes. As mentioned by many of the answers above, eat or drink nothing after midnight until after you have had your test completed. A result of 70 to 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L) indicates Normal Fasting Glucose. A result showing from 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) indicates Impaired Fasting Glucose (pre-diabetes). A result of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) and above – and if discovered, this would be tested on more than one future testing occasion – indicates Diabetes.
