Is a cure for diabetes far away in the future?

Do you think there will be a cure for type 1 diabetes in the near future?

  • Answer:

NEAR future -- no. But there is some promising work on curing Type 1 Diabetes with Adult Stem Cells. Experiments have proven effective in mice. but it is a LONG way from mice to men! First, the experiments must be duplicated, even triplicated, by other laboratories, just to make sure it was not a "fluke". Next, other lab animals, maybe pigs, might be tried. Being omnivores like humans (we eat anything), a pig's system is very much like our own. IF this treatment proves successful, the proper techniques must be developed. Where do Adult Stem Cells come from? How do the get into the patients body? Clinical trials can then begin. a Clinical Trial is just like the rat and pig experiments, except human volunteers are used. they will need to test on both diabetics and on "healthy" people to make sure there are no adverse side effects. Clinical trials of this nature can tke 5-10 YEARS to complete. Finally, all the results are given to the FDA, who must approve the treatment for human use. The approval process, especially with something as serious as this, could take 3-5 years. SOOooo..... When we look at all the experimenting that is STILL needed, it is a safe bet that a cure for Type 1 diabetes will not show up for 20-30 years. Cure in the NEAR future -- No. Cure in the not-too-distant future -- MAYBE.

My 11 year old has had type 1 for about 9 years - when he asks me this question, I tell him this: Maybe not a cure, but by the time you're an adult, it will be easier - more easier monitoring, computerized dosages, etc., that will take more of the guessing out of insulin and make life a little easier and easier as technology gets better.

You msut realise there is a cure for everything. IF eveything was cured.. the government would loose alot of money..

Tiredness can be a symptom of diabetes but is very non specific. Your age and being overweight does increase your risk Often a person in your age group will present with infections -commonly thrush/monilia as a vaginitis.. you can also present with a heart attack or stroke as a complication of diabetes. 1% of the population are diabetics another 1% are undiagnosed The easiest way to set your mind at rest is to see your doctor for a blood/urine test.

I've been a Type 1 for 25 years, and a cure has been promised to be "right around the corner" ever since my diagnosis and well before. Needless to say, no cure yet. They are making some strides with beta cell transplants, but that's been going on for at least 15 years and they still can't figure out why the body kills the new cells too. Bottom line, you need to plan to be living with Type 1 for the rest of your life, and behave accordingly.

I agree with Gary B, top contributor. There is no cure yet in the near future.
