Serious question about diabetes?

Help! My question and expanation is kind of long so read the DETAILS! My grandmas BOTH gave diabetes, so...?

  • cataracts can appear when people have diabetes. I didn't inherit diabetes (at least that's what I think. I don't have diabetes RIGHT NOW). So, i MIGHT have diabetes or I have a high chance of getting diabetes, but if you have diabetes, you can get blurred vision and cataract is an eye defect. I'm SURE that I have CATARACT, but I'm NOT SURE how I got it. So how did I get it? Inherit? I need help! It's SO strange. I didn't know how I got it.

  • Answer:

You can inherit the cataracts (tendency for them) whether you have diab. or not.

I think I understand your question. You believe you have a cataract. A cataract is the clouding of the lens in your eye. Actually the lens in your eyes start getting less and less clear as you age. The majority of older people have cataract surgery. It is very common. However, the eye problem caused by diabetes has to do with the macular portion of the eye - the inside back of the eye ball. Now get to an eye doctor for an exam and find out what is really going on. It's your vision and it might be something that needs attention right now. The eye Dr. can sometimes tell if you have diabetes just from the exam. But after the eye Dr. see your regular medical Dr. for a blood test - just a finger prick. Go early in the morning before you eat anything.
