How do I loose weight?

How do you loose weight when you're a Type 1 diabetic?

  • Help!! I'm a type 1 diabetic and I desperately need to loose weight. I'm 5'9" and 239 pounds. Before being diagnosed with diabetes almost 9 years ago, I weighed 195 pounds. So, since then I've done nothing but gain weight gradually. To start of my weight loss challenge, I started working out 3 weeks ago and at 30 minutes a day. I'm very dedicated, and go to the gym 6 times a week. My problem is that with being on insuline, it seems like its acting against me. I haven't lost any weight and now I'm starting to get discouraged. Amongst it's good benefits for me, insuline is also a hormone that stores carbs to fat cells. But, I can't exactly cut out carbs from my diet. Also, with being on insuline I need to snack regularly and that even means before going to bed. Is there anyone out there who is type 1 diabetic and struggling with weight issues like mine, and if so, were you able to overcome and loose the weight?

  • Answer:

Exercise is AWESOME - even if you don't lose weight, you're still healthier for doing it. BUT - most experts agree, and statistics back up, that the best and most successful weight loss programs incorporate both exercise and changes to diet. There was actually a study recently that sought to find out how successful portion control measures are to weight loss. They studied 150 diabetics, and the ones who used a portion-control marked plate to ensure healthy portions lost lots of weight, so much that some of the insulin-dependent ones had to adjust or go off their meds. The other group just had portion control counselling by phone. So check your diet! I'm not saying you have to buy the plate they used (you can make your own), but this seems like a really good measure. Check the link below, or check my profile for a blog post I wrote on the topic, which is a bit more thorough. Good luck!!

of course you can cut out the carbohydrates!!! I am a type 2 diabetic on insulins and orals both. And yes, the insulins help pack on the pounds if you are crazy enough to eat the wrong carbs!!! I recommend that you eliminate all white foods and tan or orange foods from your meal plan. Eat only green leafy and red vegetables, less sweet fruits such as apples, and have the good berries - blue ones for snacking. I know very few type 1s with a weight problem. So you are most likely a type 1.5??? Don't give up on exercise plan you have started. It takes time and great dedication to lose weight and tone up. Portion Control on all foods!!!! Do not eat til you are stuffed!!! Eat only small portions with sufficient natural (saturated) fats to satisfy your hunger!! Saturated Fats are not the evil monster the "specialists" have depicted for eons. Since they have been labeled as such, the world has gotten fatter because they are hooked on eating more and more grains and cereals to satisfy their hunger!!!

If you are on basal/bolus therapy, you do not have to snack unless your blood sugar is already low. Also, you could ask your doctor about amylin.

Eat less especially before bed. Balance the amount of insulin taken with the amount of food eaten. Eat whole grain carbs.
