Is it possible to have a high insulin but normal blood sugar levels?

Has anyone ever had insulin INCREASE their blood sugar levels?

  • I was recently prescribed Lantus and instructed to inject 10 units at bed time due to high blood sugar levels that Metformin and Januvia were unable to lower. I did this for 2 days and reported back to my doctor that my blood sugars were over 300 now as they were previously in the 220 - 260 range. He instructed me to change to 15 units at bed time and the next day my blood sugars were at 476. He told me to stop the injections and scheduled an appointment with my Endocrinologist. Has anyone else had this happen?

  • Answer:

Sometimes doses of insulin, esp in someone not used to it, can cause your blood sugar to drop lower than normal, and then your body may work really hard to counter that and shoot your blood sugar too high. Getting an unexpected result is why the doctor told you to stop the insulin, so they can work out what's going on. It doesn't necessarily mean you don't need insulin; it may still help you, but you could need less or a different kind. Be patient and see what they say. Good luck, I know it's tough.

It is better to consult an endocrinologist; to my opinion you are facing insulin resistance condition.

And of course your diet did not change in that time? You must control the amount of carbs you eat...restrict them tightly. Otherwise, no idea.
