How come only kids and young adults get type 1 diabetes?

Answer:
While children, teens and young adults are more prone to type 1, there are no definites. Type can can occur at any age, however it is rare to see it occur after the late 20s. The same goes for type 2. Type 2 usually occurs in older adults but in recent years, there has been an increase of it developing in the childhood and teen years and this is thought to mainly be the result of kids leading a more sedentary lifestyle (playing Nintendo as opposed to a good, physical game of tag) and poor eating habits. I'm type 1 and I developed it in my mid 20s. Mine was brought on by a traumatic injury (car accident with severe abdominal injuries). I'm insulin dependent and use a pump. There are exceptions to every rule. Remember that. EMT

Well my mom is 87 was diagnosed with type 2 10 years ago. Now the dr's have changed her diagnoses to type 1 That her original diagnoses was incorrect. Her pancreas does not produce insulin. I was diagnosed 27 yrs ago with type 1 and know I also have type 2. This happens. The difference is type 1 your pancreas does not produce insulin, type 2 your body resist insulin. When I was diagnosed with type 2 I worked out ran, lifted weights, and eat really good. Was 5lbs underweight. My body decided that it was time to resist the insulin that I was feeding it. I still don't know enough about diabetes but what I do know is you can get adult on set type 1. It is a slow progression. Watch out most of the weight that a diabetic gains is from getting their sugar under control. Go figure.

It it is mostly genetic and most children have someone in the family that had it when they were young. I sometimes wonder why the increase in Type 1 with no history of it in the family, Some are linking it to immunizations, but that is not proven. My daughter has type 1 and her grandfather, uncle, and two cousins also were diagnosed when young. Type 1 seems to be mostly predisposed, I pray they find a cure soon.

they develop it becuase type 1 diabetes is developed early. it is rare for a 50 year old to get type 1 diabetes, unless he.she has had it, and found out when they were 50.
