How can you get diabetes?
-
I know they're still researching diabetes, but three of my friends have it and I want to know more. How can do you get diabetes? Can you give it to yourself or is it most likely genetic?

Answer:
There are a lot of different things that are being investigated. Heredity has a part to play and so does diet. Other things that have a role are infections that exist long enough that their antibodies cross react with the pancreas.

Type 1 diabetes: your not really born with it. you can be diagnosed with type 1 at any age, but its usually diagnosed when you're young kid or in your teen years. you can be born with all the right "ingredients" for type 1, but there usually something in your environment that needs to mix the "ingredients" up to have type 1 diabetes. (god i hope that made sense!) Diet has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you develop type 1 type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed in people who are overweight, but that doesn't mean that thin people who exercise regularly cant get type 2 if you have family members with type 1 or type 2, then your definitely at higher risk for developing diabetes.....and eating too much sugar does NOT cause either type
You Betcha!
type 1 diabetes you are born with, however type 2 diabetes can be caused eating two much sugar aka carbohydrates, or just overeating in general

okay some of the stuff said above is not true so let me clarify... (and i have type 1 diabetes so trust me i know what im talking about) Type 1 (juvenile diabetes) you can get at any age... you are not born with it. it is not caused by diet/ exersize or anything of that sort. it is auto immune, which means that your own immune system attacks your pancreas. I got diabetes from another virus, in which my immune system attacked my pancreas instead of the virus. with type 1 you can eat anything you want, you just have togive the amount of insulin to cover your food (for me every 15 carbs i eat i have to give 1 unit of insulin). type 1 is not genetic. type 2 is highly genetic... and obesity, family history and older age are the main causes of type 2...im not postive about the details of type 2 but it's not in younger people unless they are obese. hope that clears some things up for you!!

If diabetes is in your family, you can be at risk. People that have type 2 can control it sometimes with diet and exercise, but not always. If they stray from the diet, the disease will increase the blood sugar again. There is not a cure for it and it will not go away. You can't give it to yourself, but your diet can be a factor. You don't have to be overweight to get it, you can be slim also. Many people that have diabetes, both type 1 and 2, got it from genetic, it is in their family. Just because you eat soda and candy, does not cause diabetes, nor does it mean you will get it. Many people with really lousy diets do not get diabetes. There are lots of people that have extremely healthy diets and get it.

I am shocked at the answers you received. The only correct response you received was from ml88b, and she gave you a wonderful answer. The important thing to remember - there are a number of different types of diabetes, that have different causes. The most talked about is type 2 ... but if you're young ... which I am guessing you are ... then your friends are likely type 1's. Also known as Juvenile Diabetes. Read up about it, but be careful of your sources. There is so much misinformation out there about diabetes that it is really hard to figure out what the truth is.

Type 1, you are born with. Type II is caused by eating excessive amounts of sugar, like soda pop, and candy. This tears your immune system down for one thing and over works the insulin producing organ. This intern reduces the production if insulin to maintain your blood sugar level. To high blood sugar level Leeds to all kinds of problems like blindness, poor circulation, Swollen Feet called Diabetic Neuropothy. Yes how you eat can cause big problems.

Being unhealthy, ie, obese, no exercise, eating the wrong type of foods, hereditary issues, conditions like pregnacy etc. If you think you have diabetes, get a test. Your doctor can help.

It is theorized that it can be contributed to by genetics but the main cause is strain on your body from eating too many fats and sugars causing your insulin to become depleted.

Being overweight and eating a lousy diet are the biggest contributing factors that you can control.
