Can I drink Glucerna if I don't have diabetes?
-
I am a 24 y/o female and my father has diabetes. My mom bought a bunch of the Chocolate flavor Glucerna drinks as well as the Butter Pecan and my dad wont drink the Chocolate ones. I don't have diabetes but was wondering if it would be ok to drink them as a lunch substitute. I know they have lots of vitamins and are generally good for you but I'm not sure if there are other things in them that wouldn't be so good for me, such as what helps your body create natural sugars (which diabetics need) and if it would be worth it or not. Thanks for all the help, and please give me your source if you can. p.s. I know that I could also try Ensure or Slim Fast but I hate the way those taste, and the Glucerna is here not being used. Thanks!

Answer:
Glucerna is practically identical to Ensure. The idea that diabetics have to have special foods is a myth. A diabetic is concerned about managing their carbhydrate intake and since they have to choose their foods, it's recommended that they choose healthy foods. Everyone should eat what a diabetic should eat, it's just that the consequences of not eating right is more severe with a diabetic. You really have your idea of what a diabetic needs all wrong. Any carbohydrate converts to glucose, a diabetic wants their glucose to be regulated so they would try to reduce their carbohydrates, spread them out over time and choose lower glycemic index carbs which take because they covert to glucose more slowly, however they should still have as much carbs as anyone should have just no more.

Glucerna does not make your body create natural sugars. Yes, you can drink it. Read the label, there's nothing in it that is not in other food supplements.
