Is it safe to use Open DSN?

Has anyone else been persuaded to use insulin pens, then found they prefer syringes ?

  • My DSN at the hospital told me that pens would be much easier and convenient to use. Having tried them, I found there were problems getting the correct needles to use with them, that the pharmacist, GP, nurse were all recommending different combinations of pens, needles, cartridges. This wasn't helped by the fact that I needed two pens, as I am on two different insulins After two months of struggling with them, during which time I had sugar levels of 30+ instead of the readings I usually get of 6 to 16, because the pens were jamming up I decided to go back to syringes I was made to feel as though I was either being deliberately awkward in wanting to go back to a system I have used reasonably successfully for over 15 years - or was too stupid to use the new "easier" devices. Has anyone else had problems with pens and/or changing back to syringes ? I was able to change back after being hospitalised with DKA and getting the consultant to agree that not all patients are suited by pens

  • Answer:

the pens work well for some people. I would probably prefer the old-fashioned syringe/needle. That way I SEE the dose, not just dial it.

I've used both and like both for different reasons. The main thing I like about the pen is its ease of portability. You can use it right at a table in a restaurant and nobody is the wiser. And then there's the no air bubbles factor, always a plus. But I went back to the syringe as well, because I can get shorter, finer needles that hurt less, and because I use both 70/30 and R and I don't like having to take two injects when I can mix one and get it over with in one jab.

you did not say where u live. if in the UK its pretty standard for all pens to fit with the bd needles and i find the closest to syringes is the bd 0.8 the blue ones i used syringes for a long time but found the pens a lot more convenient and switched plus theres the added bonus of not having to draw up the dose , flick , check and inject its just a case of turn to the dose and inject nice and quick but each to there own i suppose if your used to and happy with syringes there should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to continue to use them.if the pen was jamming you were using a broken one though.there are hundreds of different types of pens and pre filled injection devices out there some times its just finding the right one for me personally its the novo pen and the auto pen they do take a little getting used to but now are very convenient.

I hate the way drs treat us like we are just trying to anoy them by asking for a treatment that's right for us!!! I had a total nightmare trying to change on to pens but it is a long story! I can definitely understand why they are not right for everyone, although I think once I got used to them I found them a lot faster and more convenient to use than syringes (I use a pump now). Syringes are lighter and easier to hold and inject with so it's easy to put the needle in wrong with pens, esp. at first. You should stand by your guns - at the end of the day drs should be working with you not against you - there is no chance that syringes and vials of insulin will come off the market any time soon and they are cheaper than pens so they really shouldn't be argueing with you - it can be hard to stick up for yourself against drs but sounds like you're doing a good job at it. Different things are right for different people - honestly you wonder where some drs got their medical degrees! Good luck with it xx

Its your body, make demands. Never assume just because they are doctors or nurses that they always know what is best for you. Stand up for what you want in life or what you think is right. Force them to defend their recommendations. My son uses the syringes and would never think about a pen. By the way, if you are taking multiple shots per day have you considered the Pump? check them out. The best ones are made by medtronics. If im not mistaken it automatically tests and injects based on levels. You just tell it to inject a little extra before a meal.

My endocronologist wanted me to use the pens for injection and I tried them but it was harder for me to inject the needle into my skin. I liked them because there wasn't as much to do as when you use the insulin and the syringes. I inject my shots on my stomach where I have some fat and when I pushed the pen down it was hard to do with one hand for me. I told the doctor that I didn't like using the pen and he changed me back to the syringes.
