Can lack of sleep cause high blood sugar?
-
Note: I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes may 2011, I have hypothyroidism (controlled) and take birth control. I take 500mg Metformin as well. I have also been diagnosed with Panic Disorder (no meds just self help). Yesterday I started NutriSystem (standard) and ate what was directed for the day. I also took 2 diet pills called TruTrim and Mangodrin (both by truDERMA) in the morning. I had lunch at 12pm and had dinner at 7pm. Between this I had went to the gym and had a work out. I walked 2 miles/burned over 200 Cals. Before my workout I also took 2 more of those pills (as directed on the box). Just a small note, I neglected to drink not a whole lot of water throughout the day...bad judgement I know. After the gym my blood sugar was 116 (I took it before eating dinner). I found it very hard to fall asleep lastnight and my hands grew slightly tingly. I felt sick. I had to throw up. (Maybe from starting new diet and working out? Or new pills?) Needless to say I barely got a wink of sleep---it was a restless night to say the least. I checked my blood sugar right now at 4am and it was 141. What the heck?! Does stress and lack of sleep make blood sugar go up? Can a new diet also be a contributing factor to this? I appreciate your answers! I will be going to the doctor today after work and I will ask my doctor the same questions and if it's safe for myself as a t2 diabetic to use these diet pills. (one bottle says All Natural).

Answer:
Yes, stress does raise your glucose level, so does exercise if it's less than 30 minutes of exercise. The level of 116 mg/dl before eating is high but not diabetic, a morning reading of 141 mg/dl is high and considered diabetic but there is what's called morning effect where your body releases hormones between 2 am ad 8 am which causes your liver to release glucose. The diet pills are the most likely offenders but even anxiety ad stress can cause the symptoms that you have. You might not want to change so many things at the same time when changing your life, start with the exerciise then after a couple of weeks start the diet and if you're really must try the pills a few weeks later, to be honest the pills aren't a good idea, the nutrisystem diet is just costly on the pocketbook ( you can get the exact same diet by just buying Lean Cuisie or Healthy Choice and neither beats a real diet).

Wow, don't you think your a little obsessive with this? Anything under 200 is good in real life. Get focused on something other than your health; it'll be better for your health if you do.

"All Natural" means absolutely nothing. Some of the most deadly substances are "all natural." In the early morning, your blood sugars normally rise. I would not be surprised if you found your blood sugars were like that consistently. That said, you really need to speak to your MD about your dieting. That's a huge undertaking for a diabetic.

The Nutrisystem plan isn't particularly low in carbohydrates, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's why your blood sugar was elevated. In a diabetic, stress, illness, and lack of sleep can all affect blood sugar. I am a Type 2 with hypothyroidism, as well, and I know that you're probably struggling to lose weight (as am I), but the blood sugar has to come first right now. The Nutrisystem diet and diet pills may only be making your blood sugar worse and I don't even know how effective either one will be at losing weight. I lost 100 pounds simply by reducing carbohydrates, not counting calories, and adding in a 1-2 mile walk after dinner a couple nights a week. No packaged diets, no gyms, no diet pills. Definitely talk to your doctor about the diet pills, but also be honest with yourself about how the Nutrisystem food is affecting your blood sugar. Eat then test. Are you elevated? You may be better off just constructing your own blood sugar friendly diet at home.

Did you talk to your doctor about this TruTrim stuff? It may be messing with your Metformin and everything else. It's important that you first discuss taking any new "stuff" (even vitamins or supplements) with your doctor to make sure one pill isn't interfering or whacking out some other ones. And, yes, exercise will alter your bg levels. As will stress and lack of sleep. For diabetics, it's important that we get the required 7-8 hours of sleep so your body has time to reset itself and do whatever it normally does while we're asleep--we don't have the luxury of pushing things too far. Many diet pills also have some form of stimulant in them so be very careful. And talk to your doctor about these TruTrim things and any other diet pill you consider taking--most of them are designed for people who have NO physical problems except a bit of being overweight. If you have other physical things going on, you do need to consult your doctor.
