Best carbs for hypoglycemia?

Type 1 hypoglycemia - how many carbs?

  • My son is 16 and has type 1 diabetes. When he goes low we tend to over compensate and he ends up high. How many carbs do you take to cover your lows? For example - how many carbs to raise your blood sugar by 20 points?

  • Answer:

it all depends on how carb sensitive you are. for me i have a capri sun [17g of carbs& sugar] and i'm good. it raises mine about 50 points.

That isn't really what you need to know. You need to learn what type of diet will help to keep the blood sugars regulated. Complex carbohydrates will help. those are carbohydrates from whole grain foods. They help to keep blood sugar where it should be. Where simple carbohydrates (anything containing sugar, white bread etc.) spike blood sugar to an abnormally high range. A friend of mine with Type 1 diabetes would just drink a glass of orange juice whenever he got low - no sugar added of course.

The orange juice is a great suggestion. It is high in natural sugars which are best when trying to boost a low sugar reading, and because it is liquid it works fast. Orange juice is what my doctor recommended for my husband.

Unfortunately, it's different for every person. We all have different levels of sensitivity to carbohydrates. The best way to find out is to have your son run an experiment.

15g of carbs should help if not go 2 but really you should not go any higher as thats when you over compensate.
