Can I drink if you have diabetes?

Did you know that if you have diabetes and eat or drink sweets it can put you to sleep?

  • I have diabetes II and ate some cookies and lost almost all of today. I won't be able to sleep for some time now. Did you know about this? Do you fall asleep after eating sugar? Have you got diabetes and don't know it? This should give you a clue if you eat sugar and then sleep your life away.

  • Answer:

My grandfather has diabetes, It's gotten really tough for him, but he's pulled through. I did not know that happens to diabetics. If I drink to much root beer I go crazy and then I get really really tired. But it only happens with root beer...

Sometimes we can have a sugar crash after we consume a certain amount of sugar, which varies per individual. Make sure you are getting proper amount of sleep and never consume anything sugary on an empty stomach.

I don't think you were sleeping. I think you were unconscious from hyperglycemia. You're lucky you woke up. What were you thinking?? Learn a lesson from this. You were really playing with fire. What was your blood sugar before you fell asleep? Or did you even check it? Did you take your meds? You need to take better care of yourself. EMT

If you are a diabetic, why are you putting yourself at risk by eating a high carb sugared junk food that can put you in a coma if you sugar is already high? Do you have a death wish? If so, you are going about it the right way. That is what a glucometer, healthy diet, doctors and other aids are for. To help you stay healthy and not do stupid things.

Well I do know that if I "pig out" and my blood sugar is high, I get very sleepy, so yes, I was aware that high blood sugar can affect your ability to focus and concentrate.

Honestly, I have been a diabetic (type 1) for over 20 years and never had that happen from eating a sweet item. Of course, a low blood sugar will often lead to falling asleep after I have treated it - but the sugar itself has not caused that. Either way, please make sure to watch that sugar intake - not cause of the sleep issue you find, but because of the many other problems it can lead to.
