How do I stop the bleeding after lancing my finger for BG testing?
-
I have my lancet at level 1, and I put pressure on my finger after I'm done getting blood, but I keep bleeding for another minute or so. I test 4 times a day, so it's kind of annoying to deal with this every single time. This just started happening the past month, new or old lancets. What should I do? I had blood work done a couple of months ago and everything was normal.

Answer:
Has the doctor told you to take 81 mg Aspirin for potential heart problem? or are you on some of the cardiac meds? some of the cardiac meds and the Aspirin will cause lack of clotting problems!! Get one of the new lancets from LifeScan. they have a 33 gauge lancet tip! I think they are called Delica and for me, they don't prick my fingers very well. They come packed with the new Mini but can be purchased separately I think. That is the meter I keep in my purse. Anyway, they make a very tiny hole!

Pressure is really all that can be done, you'll have to apply pressure longer. You could use a styptic pencil to stop the bleeding. That's a pencil containing astringents that contract the tissue to stop bleeding, it was used to stop razor blade cuts back when shaving with a blade was popular. You should tell your Doctor, level 1 is the lightest level and the bleeding should stop very quickly.

If you are taking any other types of medication (for other things) they might be interfering with your ability to clot. My finger pokes usually only provide one drop of blood before they close up. And if your BG level is regularly around 100, you should talk to your doctor about maybe not having to poke yourself so frequently. I just saw my doc today and since my numbers have generally been between 90-115 (max), we decided I only need to test my blood when I eat something out of my normal foraging range (more to see how it affects me--I don't often eat a lot of strange food because I don't have a lot of strange new food available (because I'd probably be trying them if I did))--and I'll test maybe weekly just to make sure things are not getting out of hand. Testing 4 times a day if you've been able to keep your BG close to or under 100 seems like too much testing.

Simply apply direct pressure to the area of the wound for a few minutes, my friend.
