What are the bioethical issue of insulin?

Can anything be done legally about a diabetic coworker who tests her blood and injects insulin at her desk?

  • I work with a diabetic woman who tests her blood and injects herself with insulin at her desk. There are 7 of us in our department which is an open area. We find this higly offensive but HR seems afraid to address this situation. Could the reason they don't want to address this issue be they're afraid of violating some type of workplace discrimination law?

  • Answer:

As people with diabetes, we need to become comfortable with testing and giving injections in public. We do not need to hide in the bathroom. Why don't you go in the bathroom when she has to do a test ? Unless you are looking, you wouldn't even know about it. You sound like a fun group of co-workers. Get over yourselves.

Maybe you and your coworkers need to get over yourselves and realize that this woman has a medical condition that needs to be dealt with. I am sure that she would be willing to trade places with you.

I have the answer to your problem: Dont watch her. How the heck can you see her take her shot unless she's using a mammoth size needle? do you sit a foot away from her or something? How can you see that tiny drop of blood on her finger unless she uses a mammoth size poker that causes blood to run down her hand? I personally dont see the offensive part. She shouldnt have to go to a dirty public restroom to test and take a shot

You Betcha!

Thank your lucky stars that is NOT you and stop being so freaking ignorant to someone else's health problems. :Last time I looked the World didn't revolve around You!!!!

WHY are any of you offended? She needs to take care of herself. I am sure you do things that HR can come after you for too... And yes, there are laws that protect diabetics. Try looking into them. I admit your coworker COULD find another place to do this, but you could also find some tolerance for the situation. You should consider yourself lucky you are not in HER position.

First of all you and your co workers need to be a little more understanding. But, if you really feel that her doing so at her desk all the time and not just when it is really needed is something that needs to be address perhaps ya'll should talk to her about it. Explain to her that you know that she cannot help that she has the health issue but it is something that you and your fellow co workers are not comfortable with either due to the needles or the fact of the sight of blood. If you are willing to talk to her compassiantly then maybe an understanding could be met.

I was just diagnosed yesterday. Quit complaining and feeling so sorry for yourselves and thank God it isn't any of YOU.

What are you offended about? Are you worried about blood bourne pathogens flying through the air and making you sick? Is it the fact that you might see her belly skin? I can see how lifting a shirt up enough to display one's midsection might be inappropriate, but unless she's spilling blood from testing on her desk or other places, there's really nothing gross about it. Good on her for testing her blood sugar regularly! Means she's taking care of herself! If it really bothers you, decide WHAT aspect of it is most inappropriate and see if you can work out a way to have HR talk to her about changing that one aspect. Perhaps the exposing of her belly would be one aspect. Or making sure she washes her hands after the fingerpoke so that she's not dripping blood anywhere.

That is ridiculous. People just do not understand. If you knew anything about the diease you would not be asking this question. She needs this to survive. No action can be taken. If you do not like it, do not watch. I am a diabetic and I am needle dependent. If I knew you and you said something like that to me, I would not hesitate to slap you silly. Diabetics need insulin to live just like you need air to breathe.

diabetics have to keeo very close ck on thier blod glucose levels if their sugar drops drasticly they can go into a diabetic coma. Why do you find the fact that she is taking proper care of herslef offensive? Injecting with insulin is very important for the diabetics that have to do it. yes she could find a better place but she is in her work area. put yourself in their place. you life completely changes when your diabetic or when you live with one.
