Black salt marsh mosquitoes - help - huge welts?
-
Sorry to post twice but I wasn't sure which category to use. I decided to walk the trail at the Wetlands by my house completely forgetting that we have this particular type of mosquito here also known as the salt marsh terror. Last year I was covered in welts because we had an infestation but these 3 bites are MUCH worse. Each one is about the size of a golf ball, the one on the back of my leg is even bigger. I'm kinda freaking out about this & I've searched the web but I can't find info on whether it's normal for the bite to look like this. I called the Vector Control & they didn't really help. I do have allergies to several insects like fleas too. Could that be the reason?

Answer:
Take Benadryl (that should be a STAPLE in your cupboard!) and that should help with the itch or allergic reaction. My concern though is that it is INFECTED. You can easily get a staph infection from a bite and if you don't treat it, it can become very serious, spread to your blood and kill you. I'm not joking either it happened to me. I had to go on IV antibiotics for FIVE days.... (I took oral for 3 days and they did nothing). If they are red and spreading I suggest you go immediately and start on antibiotics. The Benadryl will help with swelling and itchiness. Buy something (Polysporin lotion, clear) with a numbing agent that has an anti itch stuff on it too. You may want to cover it up with gauze so you don't scratch. The scratching can get the staph bacteria into the bite. Don't wait if you see the welts spreading. My son and I both have a horrible time with mosquito bites and allergic reactions and the Benadryl is the first thing we go for when bitten. Good luck and sheesh, WEST NILE is out there...stay covered and always wear light coloured clothing and long pants/sock/shoes when out. PS you don't even know what bit you. It could be spiders or some other bug too and they can be nasty. I would go on antibiotics as a precaution right away in this case. Don't assume it's just a mosquito that bit you, tell the doctor you don't know but you suspect.

If they are just nasty welts but they fade over a few days, you're fine. If they are getting bigger, changing shape, itching excessively, if there is pus or oozing, blood that is leaking out of the bites, get to a doc. Best thing to do is calamine or hydrocortizone anit-itch medication. Rub into the welts and use ice, 15 minutes at a time, to help reduce the inflamation. If this doesn't work, try taking low dose aspirin for a day or so to help the blood flow take care of the swelling and inflammation. Always check in with a doc if it doesn't begin to go away or if it gets worse. If you have allergies to other insects, most likely it if the same with this mosquito. Good luck!
