What are the symptoms of black mold and what does it look like?

Help! The apartment we live in has mold...?

  • in a windowseal, Ive bleached it, Ive called the maintnence guy and all he did was calk over it, so after it dried (2days later) i could still see the mold and i called the managers again and told them i wanted an inspector to come in and look at it, for a professional oppinion. They wouldnt do it, they sent the maintnence guy back again and he sprayed some killer stuff on it and spray painted over it! I dont know if this will realy help the mold or not b\c now i cant see it. Also we have cracks in the seams of our wall in the same room it looks like it might be water damage b\c it bubbles out and started to crack but i dont feel any moisture in there, he calked that and spray painted over that as well. I dont know what to do? I dont know if its a safe living environment, Also i have been sick (alergy like symptoms) i did reasearch on mold and it says it can cause alergy like symptoms, what should I do??????

  • Answer:

You should call an inspector yourself. Even better your local housing board. Just as a really out there fact.....most of the laws I know of regarding mold and mildew removal and abatement are almost exactly the same as were prescribed in the Bible in Leviticus. Check it out. Even if not for the religious aspect it sure does make for interesting reading.

Get out as fast as you can. I lived in such a place for 20yrs. The trap is your energy becomes so low you can't function. That is to say with time you will not have enough energy to move. The government protects the landlords. In my case the inspectors said that my painting would protect us from the mold in the walls, it did not. After leaving the landlord rented the place and charged me for a new paint job! MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!

By covering it up, you can no longer tell if it was successfully killed, which is a big no-no on the maintenance guy's part. Also, if the living conditions in your apartment are making you sick (and the type of mold you've researched matches the mold in your apartment) then you have every right to complain to the managers that their complex is not a healthy living environment. If the manager you're talking to won't do anything about, request contact information for his manager. If he's the highest on the chain, I would suggest looking up an inspector on your own.

My neighbors had the exact same problem with mold in their apartment. No one would listen to them or help them for almost a year. I couldn't believe how her walls were covered in mold. It's a very serious problem and can really affect your health. Just this week she had to move out of her apartment for a month so that the place can be ripped apart to get rid of the mold. Bleach, paint, caulk will not make it go away. You have to have professionals come in to get rid of it. You have to be really persistent with these people because it can be dangerous to your health. Good Luck!
