Is Prednisone only taken once a day?

My sister was prescribed a "lethal" dose of prednisone?

  • My sister went to the ER last night, as she is 17 and had a severe allergic reaction to poison ivy... The Dr prescribed 50 mg of prednisone to be taken 5 times a day.(300 mg) The pharmacist where she went to fill the prescription was shocked and said, "this will kill her"- We are thankful to say the least... But what can we do now and is this true? My parents are beyond furious!

  • Answer:

Sounds like a very serious error. I've beenon prednisone many many times for crohn's disease, and the dose usually starts out at 50mg once a day for a couple of weeks, then decreases by 5mg per day until it is finished. Usually a couple of months. Call the doctor (or have the pharmacist call the doctor) to double check the directions. For something fairly benign like poison ivy, I would think the dose would be much much less.

I don't know exactly what the lethal dose would be, but I took prednisone a couple of years ago for my throat (which swelled shut thanks to allergies) and it gave me the worst side effects ever! This is some strong stuff and if possible, I would tell your sister to avoid it all together. Hope you get the answers you need! Good Luck!

wo! that is really really really scary. I'm glad for your sisters sake that the pharmacist had the smarts to pick up on that heres a small amount of information; Recommended dosage for Prednisone Dosage is determined by the condition being treated and your response to the drug. Typical starting doses can range from 5 milligrams to 60 milligrams a day. Once you respond to the drug, your doctor will lower the dose gradually to the minimum effective amount. For treatment of acute attacks of multiple sclerosis, doses of as much as 200 milligrams per day may be given for a week, followed by 80 mg every other day for a month.

prednisolone is normally taken once a day at the same time each day, that sounds terrible. 50mg is an ok dose once a day, in fact my daughter had 60mg when she was taking it. lucky the pharmacist spotted the mistake, unfortunately doctors and pharmacists arehuman and can make mistakes but it needs to be reported

call the dr. who prescribed the meds. It may be, and probably is, a handwriting problem. He said 5d and the pharm said 50. Don't take any med until you talk to the dr. who prescribed it. A good thing the pharm caught the error. TX Mom
