Can allergies cause stomach aches?

Can certain foods cause terrible stomach aches *every* time you eat them, but NOT cause an allergic reaction?

  • Two weeks ago I got SERIOUS stomach pains (not reflux pains, or intestinal pains...pain was actual visceral stomach pain) after eating Pad Thai. Last night I had a pasta dish and once again got terrible stomach pains, followed by diarrhea. The ONLY similarities between these dishes is that 1.) they both had srhimp, and 2.) I think they both had Soba noodles. I was thinking I had an allergy to shrimp or something... but I didnt get any hives or other allergic reactions...just this intense stomach pain. Thanks for your input and I will choose a Best Answer ASAP. Have a nice day.

  • Answer:

Sounds like a wheat sensitivity. See a doctor and God bless.

life is sweet

Could have been the wheat, or it could be a shrimp allergy. I am allergic to sulfa. The only reaction I ever had I instantly got a stomach ache and vomited. That's way back when the doctors made house calls. Needless to say, he didn't back up fast enough.

Many times that is how food allergies manifest initially. Discomfort, bloating, loss of apatite... This occurs when the immune cells responsible for allergic reaction are in the gut but not in the skin. Skin manifestations occur because the protein and glycoprotein antigens that cause a problem are chopped up and sent through the lymph and blood streams during digestion. Your trigger is either not being distributed or you are still at an early stage in developing the allergy and the IgE/antigen-specific mast cells haven't moved throughout your body yet. You don't want to mess with food allergies. You don't want to keep eating what you are allergic to. Doing so will eventually lead to scaring of the intestinal lumen, which will impede your ability to absorb nutrients from your food for the rest of your life. As you get older, the effects of this will become more pronounced. If I were you, I would consider a RAST test for allergies, as it seems that a skin test may not be accurate.
