Is Indian food generally gluten free?

Do any restaurants serve gluten free food?

  • Restaurants, fast food places, whatever. I mean besides the obvious gluten free food like fruit and meat and stuff. My lil sis just got diagnosed with celiac disease. We have found lots of gluten free recipes you can make at home, but we haven't really looked into fast food and stuff. I see some restaurants have special low carb menus and stuff, but what about gluten free?

Some restaurants have a list of thier foods and allergens. White spot restaurant has one. If she doesn't have trouble with dairy, she can eat ceasar salad with plain chicken breast and no croutons. Deli's sometimes have hummus, its great with taco chips. Some restaurants have fish dishes, or chicken. You just need to talk to the waitress or chef. She can substitute or eliminate gluten items from her plate. Also there may be a list of restaurants that can prepare gluten free food in your area, just do an online search. Oh, if she likes sushi, tamari soy sauce (one of thier kinds) is gluten free. I just bring some with me in a tupperware, as regular soy sauce has wheat in it. Knowledge is key, help her do research online of foods and hidden ingredients that contain gluten like artificial and nautral flavours. The more familiar she is with what she cant have the more foods she will discover she can have. I hope this helps. Please feel free to e-mail me if you need any more info or help in the gluten free area. Good luck.

Depends on where you live but to my knowledge, virtually none. Some restaraunts are okay and will modify meals to accomodate. Went to a very large, popular place for dinner and asked about a good gluten-free meal for children (ie, not too spicy or hard to chew). The waitress smiled and said "Gluten? Is that a kind of sugar?" Your sister WILL get used to no take-away. Being the one that cooks every meal is when you miss it! Good luck.

Eating out at restaurants is always a challenge for somebody with celiac disease. The trick is to not be afraid to ask as many questions as possible and to be educated yourself so that you will talk from a position of authority when discussing the implications of gluten contamination. ALWAYS be polite and not demanding as this will get you a lot further with restaurant staff. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in '99 and have had pretty good luck while eating out. You will very quickly find which restaurants work for you and which ones to forget about. There are a lot of big chains with dedicated gluten-free menus and a lot of independently owned restaurants with either gluten-free menus or understanding (and willing to help) staff. Just be patient and things will fall into place and celiac disease will not be a burden but a simple question that needs to be asked. A good resource for gluten-free restaurants is: CeliacHandbook.com http://www.celiachandbook.com Good luck in your search.

I was diagnosed this summer with celiac disease. My dietitian told me that you should ask at a restaurant to speak with the cook, because most waiters and waitresses don't know what it is or might have trouble explaining it to the cook and mess some detail up, with good intentions. Make sure that the cook knows all of the specifications and understands clearly. This you can do at any restaurant. My dietitian also told me that a lot of steak houses such as Texas Road House have it listed on their menus as well as Eat n Park, however i haven't really been out to eat since i've been diagnosed so im not sure of all the places that do this... From my understanding all fast food is basically off limits, because everywhere that i can think of cooks everything together, which means the breading cross contaminates the food, however Wendy's Frosties are gluten free.... I hope this helps and good luck

I have celiac disease as well and I live in southern California. While I have heard of any specific gluten free restaurants in my area, I know they do exist in other areas. It depends on where you live. What I do when I go out to eat is I talk to the chef about what I can have and what I cannot have and then they usually make suggestions on what they can safely make for me. It seems that more and more chefs and restaurants are becoming knowledgeable about celiac disease and are more willing to work with me than when I was first diagnosed. I just recently had a wonderful dinner at the olive garden that was a dish of chicken and vegetables that was delicious! They made it especially for me and used a sauce that was gluten free. All the links that other people gave you are really good websites, make sure you check them out. I won't include them again since you already have them, but they are the ones that I use as well, especially when I am traveling.

Always ask the manager of any restaurant before taking somebody allergic to gluten, you never know unless you ask.
