Why have peanut allergies increased so rapidly?

  • My son's daycare no longer allows peanute products due to "several" children have "severe" peanut allergies. Now seriously, how have peanut allergies picked up so rapidly? When I was in school (and that wasn't long ago, I graduated high school in 2007) there was ONE kid with peanut allergies. ONE. he had a bracelet that said "NO NUTS" on it. Now it seems like every other child will just die if someone eats a Reese's. I have kids. None of them have peanut allergies. Or any allergies. I have four siblings, none of them do either. What has changed that makes people's kids so "Deathly Allergic" to nuts now? And how do this "allergic" kids ever leave the house? There are peanute products everywhere, in walmart, in restaurants, everywhere! any reasoning behind it, or is it just hysteria?

    This doesn't actually answer your question (sorry), but my daycare never allowed anyone to bring in / serve anything with peanuts in them. Same with strawberries. You're actually not supposed to serve those foods to any children under 2 years of age because if they did happen to have an allergy, the reaction could be fatal.

My ex husband's family all was deathly allergic to nuts and other various allergens. We carried an epi-pen after an incident where the waiter did not inform him a dish had almond bits in it, my ex-MIL could not walk into the mall without her throat closing up because they roasted nuts in the food court. Point is some people do have such severe allergies that any contamination can be harmful to their health and well-being. I used to be like pbft! I like peanut butter get over it. Since starting a gluten-free diet I have new found respect for what people with allergies go through it's not easy. What if you had to be told "no you can't eat/touch/breathe that" all the time? Please don't be a jerk and make things harder on a kid who can not visit a food court without a shot in the arm.
