Dairy, gluten and wheat free and being healthy?
-
Is it ok being dairy, gluten and wheat free with IBS? I know its diffcult to only eat food like I live in the uk. But I do like being healthy and trying to do lots of exercise. I didn't seem to get on with oats either so I am limited. Im not keen on Tofu. If there's anyone that is doing well being limited on foods like this could you help me please any websites you use or books. I know theres loads of books but I could be looking for years and spending loads of money buying them or reserving them through the library but that's going to start getting expensive.

Answer:
It is ok to cut foods out of your diet, but under the guidance of your doctor. Have you seen a gastroenterologist? Unless your IBS diagnosis was given by a gastroenterologist, there is a chance you were given the wrong diagnosis. IBS is give to people with bowel issues, but no explanation why. Were you tested for Celiac Disease or Inflammatory Bowel Disease? Did they rule out a diary intolerance? Many gastroenterologists believe that the biggest triggers in IBS are stress and dietary. Never one or the other. I'd recommend you keep a diary of your symptoms, your food intake and your bowel movements. That way you may begin to see a pattern of what make you worse and what made you better. All the things you'll find in books (unfortunately for society) can be all found online. So if you Google the right things, you'll find them. Make sure you're eating 5+ servings (a serving is the size of your fist) each day, 8 glasses of water, some red meat 3 times a week and eat a wide variety of food. If you can, you could speak to a dietitian. I'd also recommend getting blood tests done regularly to check for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. This can happen when people remove food groups from their diet. If you haven't already removed gluten from your diet, don't! Go and see your doctor and be tested for Celiac Disease. If you have removed gluten from your diet, your tests for Celiac Disease will come back negative even if you've got it. Good luck. P.S. gluten includes wheat, barely, rye and oats. So if you say gluten free, that trumps wheat free. ....

Generally ethnic foods like mexican (corn tortillas) or asian/sushi (soy has gluten but you can buy some that doesnt). There are soy, coconut, and rice alternatives to dairy. You can always eat meat, veggies, fruit, rice and other grains (I think Barley if wheat tho). I only eat tofu in smoothies (squeez extra water out, freeze some berries mangos, and add juice). There are meat alternative soy products if you are vegan.
