Can you be disqualified at MEPS for having an allergy to nickel?

Can diagnostic allergy blood work tell my reaction to a certain allergen?

  • I recently went to a MEPS to get processed, and other than one allergy I was good to go. I was told when I was young that I was allergic to Penicillin, and my mom told me I had a bad reaction to it. At least this is what I thought. 15 years later I talk to her about it and she told me that she was talking about herself and that SHE was very allergic to Pen.. Anyway, I went with an interview with the doc. and he asked me if I had any allergies. I told him I had an allergy to Pen. and he asked me the symptoms, and ended up putting the symptoms for anaphylaxis in my mouth because I had no idea of my reaction anyway. An anaphylactic reaction so something is means for disqualification. I am disqualified pending a waiver, but I set up an appointment with an allergist to get blood work done and see if I actually AM allergic to Pen. On the offchance that I am not, I will be able to get that record voided. Anyway, if it DOES come up that I am allergic to penicillin in the blood work, is there any way for them to tell what my reaction to it would be so that I could contradict the "Anaphylactic reaction to penicillin" on my med record and get it stricken? Thank you. =)

  • Answer:

They won't be able to tell your exact reaction but they'd be able to tell whether you would have one and if it's severe or not. Way too many people say they are allergic to penicillin, I don't know why. Some have never even had it or just say it because their parent did.
